INTRODUCTION

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION contains Hydrocortisone which belongs to the group of medicines called Corticosteroids. CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION is used to treat endocrine disorders (diseases of endocrine glands), rheumatic disorders (inflammatory and autoimmune diseases), and hematologic disorders (blood disorders) in affected individuals.

It is also used to treat collagen diseases (autoimmune disease), dermatologic diseases, ophthalmic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, respiratory diseases, and neoplastic diseases. The medicine is also indicated for use to replace insufficient corticosteroid hormone, and treat edematous & allergic states, and medical emergencies (such as shock/severe allergic reactions) in affected individuals.

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients allergic to hydrocortisone. It is also not recommended for use in patients with systemic fungal infections, viral infections (such as herpes simplex eye infection, vaccinia, varicella), and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (blood disorder marked by low platelet levels). The medicine is also not indicated for use in patients who had recently received live attenuated vaccines.

Before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have/have had an infection (such as herpes simplex, chickenpox, tuberculosis, threadworm), bleeding/clotting problem, suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bone), high blood pressure, oedema (swelling in arms/legs), diabetes, kidney problems (such as renal insufficiency), and/or liver problems (such as cirrhosis).

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be administered with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be administered with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years).  If the medicine is to be received for a longer period of time, then frequent tests on the child needs to be conducted to prevent risk of developing high intracranial pressure in the child. The medicine is advised to be administered with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) after consulting the doctor.

The most common side effects associated with the use of CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION are pain and swelling at the site of injection. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsens.

  • Treats endocrine disorders, rheumatic disorders, and hematologic disorders

HOW CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION WORKS

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION works by replacing insufficient cortisol (naturally produced steroid) levels and blocks the production of certain chemical messengers (responsible for inflammation and allergies) in the body which results in decreased swelling and providing relief from inflammation and pain in affected individuals.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous injection/infusion or into a muscle as an intramuscular injection. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTIONfor you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • pain, swelling at the site of injection

RARE

  • skin reactions
  • anaphylactic reactions (life threatening allergic reaction)
  • blindness associated with periocular (area surrounding the eyeball) injections

Stop receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • signs of heart failure such as shortness of breath, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, and/or irregular heartbeat
  • signs of high blood pressure such as headaches, feeling unwell
  • signs of stomach ulcers such as stomach pain, blood in stools, and/or vomiting blood
  • convulsions
  • signs of reactivated tuberculosis such as coughing blood, and/or chest pain
  • signs of infections such as raised temperature, feeling unwell
  • signs of osteoporosis (thin, fragile bones) such as bone/joint pain, broken bones, and/or back pain (that gets worse when standing/walking)
  • signs of allergic reactions such as rash, red itchy welts, difficulty while swallowing/breathing, and/or swelling of the face, lips, tongue/throat
  • you/your child gets infected to measles/chickenpox

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution during pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

BREASTFEEDING

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women only if it is necessary since the medicine may pass through breastmilk. Consult your doctor before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines if you experience dizziness, vertigo (internal spinning sensation), visual disturbances and/or tiredness after receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

KIDNEY

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be received with caution in patients with kidney problems such as renal inefficiency. Consult your doctor before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

LIVER

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be received with caution in patients with liver disease such as cirrhosis. Consult your doctor before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION if you are allergic to hydrocortisone, any other corticosteroid medicine, and/or any other ingredients in the medicine. Consult doctor before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

HEART DISEASE

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be received with caution in patients with heart disease such as heart failure, heart attack, and congestive heart disease. Consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

OTHERS

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION is not recommended to receive if you:

  • have systemic fungal infections
  • are suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (blood disorder marked by low platelet levels)
  • are administered with live attenuated vaccines
  • are suffering from viral infections such as herpes simplex eye infection (potentially serious type of eye infection), vaccinia, varicella

Before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

  • have/have had an infection (such as herpes simplex, chickenpox, tuberculosis, threadworm)
  • have bleeding/clotting problem
  • are suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bone)
  • have high blood pressure
  • have oedema (swelling in arms/legs)
  • have diabetes
  • have/had seizures (convulsions), and/or other neurological problems
  • have thyroid problem
  • suffer from signs of myasthenia gravis such as muscle pain, muscle weakness
  • are suffering from retinal problems/certain eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, herpes infection (viral infection of eye)
  • have certain mental/mood conditions such as depression
  • have/had stomach or gut problems such as ulcer or ulcerative colitis
  • are suffering from low potassium/calcium levels in the blood
  • have a weak immune response
  • are scheduled for a surgery

Use in Paediatrics:

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be administered with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years).  If the medicine is to be received for a longer period of time, then frequent tests on the child needs to be conducted to prevent risk of developing high intracranial pressure. If the medicine is administered to a premature baby, then few tests are conducted to monitor heart function. Consult your doctor before child receives the medicine.

Use in Geriatrics:

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Consult your doctor before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • aspirin (used to reduce fever and relieve pain)
  • amphotericin B (used to treat serious and potentially life-threatening fungal infections)
  • isoniazid (used to treat or prevent recurrence of tuberculosis)
  • rifampicin (medicine used to treat tuberculosis)
  • erythromycin, clarithromycin, troleandomycin (medicines used to treat bacterial infections)
  • anticoagulants (used to prevent blood clots) Ex. rivaroxaban, dabigatran
  • anticonvulsants (medicines used to treat seizures) Ex. carbamazepine
  • barbiturates (sedative-hypnotic medication used to treat seizures) Ex. phenobarbital, phenytoin
  • neuromuscular blockers (used in anesthesia to facilitate endotracheal intubation) Ex. rocuronium, vecuronium
  • anticholinesterase (medicines used to treat Alzheimer disease) Ex. galantamine, donepezil
  • antidiabetics (medicines used to treat diabetes) Ex. insulin, metformin
  • antiemetics (medicines used to ease nausea, vomiting) Ex. aprepitant, fosaprepitant
  • antifungals (medicines used to treat fungal infections) Ex. itraconazole, ketoconazole
  • HIV protease inhibitors (medicines used to treat HIV) Ex. atazanavir, darunavir 
  • aromatase inhibitors (used to treat breast cancer) Ex. aminoglutethimide
  • calcium channel blocker (used to treat low blood pressure) Ex. diltiazem
  • cardiac glycosides (used to treat heart failure and irregular heartbeats) Ex. digoxin
  • cholestyramine (used to lower high cholesterol level in blood)
  • oral contraceptives (used to prevent pregnancy) Ex. estrogens
  • somatropin (used to treat growth failure)
  • cyclosporine (used to prevent organ transplant failure)
  • immunosuppressant (used to stop your immune system from attacking health cells) Ex. cyclophosphamide, tacrolimus
  • diuretics (used to treat low blood pressure) Ex. chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone
  • beta2 agonists (used to treat asthma and COPD) Ex.  salbutamol, terbutaline
  • vaccines (used to boost immune system) Ex. chickenpox vaccine

B. Drug-Food interaction:

Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION as it may cause steroid toxicity.

Overdosage:

CORTISAFE 100MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms.
