INTRODUCTION

CEDON DROPS contains Cefpodoxime which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children such as acute otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear leading to pain and fever), pharyngitis or tonsilitis (sore throat, difficulty swallowing and tender lymph nodes), sinusitis (inflammation around the nasal cavity leading to headache and runny nose).

It is also used to treat bronchitis (inflammation of tubes which carry air leading to difficulty in breathing) and infection of the urinary tract (cystitis), pneumonia (an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs) and gonococcal infection (sexually transmitted disease by indirect contact with an infected parent).  

Before giving CEDON DROPS to your child, inform your child’s doctor if your child have or ever had colitis, liver problems and impaired kidney function. Your child’s doctor may monitor the blood count and liver enzymes in blood tests during treatment with CEDON DROPS.

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in pregnant or breast-feeding women and elderly individuals as it is used only in children. CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in infants less than 2 months of age.

The most common side effects of taking CEDON DROPS are diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain and headache. Consult your child’s doctor if any of the side effects worsens.

USES OF CEDON DROPS

Treats bacterial infections in children such as:

  • Acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  • Acute otitis media
  • Cystitis (uncomplicated urinary tract infection)
  • Gonococcal infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Sinusitis  
  • Pharyngitis/tonsillitis

HOW CEDON DROPS WORKS

CEDON DROPS prevents infection by stopping or preventing the bacteria from multiplying by inhibiting their cell wall formation, which is essential for the bacteria to survive as it provides protection from the environment. This kind of action that kills bacteria is useful in treating various bacterial infections.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Give CEDON DROPS to your child as advised by the physician. Tap the bottle to loosen the powder. Add two-thirds of the sterile water (provided with the pack) and shake the bottle vigorously. Add more water up to the mark on the bottle and shake well before using. Allow the suspension to stand for 5 minutes. Use a medicine dropper to properly measure the dose.

Your child’s doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of CEDON DROPS for your child depending upon the age, body weight and type or severity of the infection.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CEDON DROPS

COMMON

  • diarrhoea 
  • nausea, vomiting
  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • skin rash including diaper rashes and fungal skin rashes

UNCOMMON

  • fungal, bacterial and parasitic infections
  • abdominal distention, malaise, fatigue, weakness, fever, chest pain, back pain, chills, generalized pain
  • abscess, allergic reaction, and facial edema
  • localized edema, and pain
  • congestive heart failure, palpitations, changes in blood pressure
  • hematoma (collection of blood outside the blood vessels)
  • migraine
  • vomiting, gastritis, dry mouth, flatulence, decreased appetite, constipation
  • ulcers in mouth, tongue disorders, tooth disorders, increased thirst and toothache
  • anaemia, dehydration and weight gain
  • dizziness, insomnia, somnolence, anxiety, shakiness, nervousness, impaired concentration, confusion, nightmares, headache, syncope
  • vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • cough, wheezing, breathing difficulty
  • skin rash with itching, hair loss, and sunburn
  • taste alterations, eye irritation, taste loss and ear pain
  • urinary tract infections

RARE

  • changes in blood counts such as neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytosis, leukopenia, and leucocytosis  

Stop giving CEDON DROPS to your child and contact doctor immediately if your child experiences any of the following side effects:  

  • severe diarrhoea due to pseudomembranous colitis
  • signs of allergic reaction (skin rash, joint pain, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue)
  • signs of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (blistering or bleeding of the skin around the lips, eyes, mouth, nose, genitals and fever)
  • signs of toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe blistering rash where peeling of skin layer exposes the skin along with feeling of being unwell, fever, chills and muscle pain)
  • signs of erythema multiforme (skin rash or skin lesions with a pink/red ring and a pale centre which may be itchy, scaly, or filled with fluid, especially on the palms or soles of your feet)
  • itching, redness, burning sensation in the vagina along with white vaginal discharge
  • signs of severe anemia type (infections occur more easily than usual, yellowing of the skin, eyes or mouth and feeling tired)
  • seizures mainly in patients with impaired kidney function
  • eyelid dermatitis (swelling and redness of eyelid followed by itchy and scaly skin)
  • signs of purpuric nephritis (bruises on legs along with kidney impairment)
  •  liver damage
  • pulmonary infiltrate with eosinophilia (presence of eosinophils inside the lungs)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Follow simple meal plan for your child while administering CEDON DROPS. Avoid giving foods that are oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not let your child to lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Consult child’s doctor if the symptom does not improve.    

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your child’s head. Advise your child to take rest in a quiet room. Massage child’s scalp or head with mild pressure for relieving effect. Consult child’s doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Diarrhea:

Advise your child to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Avoid giving your child a high-fat diet or spicy foods. Try to avoid giving any medicine on your own to your child to treat diarrhea. Consult child’s doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Stomach pain:

Advice your child to rest and relax. Tell your child to eat and drink slowly or try to have lesser and more frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on child’s stomach to relieve pain. Consult child’s doctor if the symptom gets worse.

PREGNANCY

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in pregnant women as it is used only in children.

BREASTFEEDING

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women as it is used only in children.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not let your child ride bicycles or drive other vehicles or operate any tools if they feel dizzy after taking CEDON DROPS.

KIDNEY

CEDON DROPS should be taken with caution in children with impaired kidney function. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of CEDON DROPS

LIVER

CEDON DROPS should be taken with caution in children with liver problems. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of CEDON DROPS.

ALLERGY

Do not give CEDON DROPS to your child if they are allergic to cefpodoxime or to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics (such as cefuroxime, cefixime) or if they had experienced immediate or severe allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics such as aztreonam. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of CEDON DROPS.

LUNGS

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in children with pneumonia or atypical pneumonia caused by certain organisms. Consult your child’s doctor for advice before administration of CEDON DROPS.

OTHERS

Before giving CEDON DROPS to your child, inform child’s doctor if your child:

  • have a history of gastrointestinal disease (particularly colitis)

Use in Paediatrics:

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in infants (less than 2 months of age) due to lack of safety and effectiveness. Therefore, consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in Geriatrics:

CEDON DROPS is not recommended for use in elderly patients as it is used only in children.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before giving CEDON DROPS to your child, inform to child’s doctor if your child is taking or receiving any of the following medicines:  

  • medicines used to treat stomach acid symptoms such as indigestion or stomach ulcers (Ex. aluminium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone) 
  • propantheline (used to treat gastric ulcers)
  • medicines for treating gastric ulcers (Ex. ranitidine, cimetidine)
  • medicines used to treat high blood pressure or fluid retention (Ex. spironolactone, bumetanide, torsemide)
  • other medicines used to treat bacterial infections (Ex. gentamicin, streptomycin)
  • probenecid (used to prevent and treat gouty arthritis)
  • warfarin (used to prevent and treat blood clots)

Overdosage:

If your child or anyone else accidentally takes too much of CEDON DROPS, consult your child’s doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of CEDON DROPS are nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, epigastric distress and encephalopathy may occur in patients with renal insufficiency.

When does CEDON DROPS start showing its effect?

CEDON DROPS usually starts working in one to two hours. You should wait for improvement in symptoms as there are no external improvements seen with it. CEDON DROPS should be given to your child regularly for every 12 hours for 5-14 days as advised by your child’s doctor even if your child starts feeling better in the first 2 days.

Can CEDON DROPS be given with milk?
