Piles, also known as hemorrhoids are the accumulation of inflamed and swollen tissues in the anal canal.Hemorrhoids

These hemorrhoids have blood vessels, supporting tissue, and muscles; and can occur both inside and outside the rectal region in varying sizes. Piles are a common problem and may even be inherited. Piles are graded as I-IV based on the level of complication, where grade IV piles require immediate medical treatment.

Under increased pressure the lower rectum, the blood vessels of anus and rectum stretches, swells, and form piles. This can occur because of chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, heavy weight lifting, pregnancy.

Age and family history are other factors that can cause piles. However, the symptoms are not visible in half of the individuals before 50 years of age.

Signs and Symptoms

  • A hard and painful lump outside the anus
  • May contain blood, these piles are called thrombosed
  • Itching, redness, and pain in the area around the anus
  • Blood in the bowel movement
  • Pain during bowel movements

In severe conditions there can be, excessive anal bleeding, infection, fecal incontinence and strangulated hemorrhoid.

Treatments include medication or surgical options, including prescribed drugs, corticosteroids, and laxatives for relieving inflammation and itching.

However, lifestyle changes such as increased water consumption, losing body weight, and healthy diet are recommended for people with piles.
