Diltiazem: Calcium Channel Blockers
How Diltiazem works
Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker. It relaxes the blood vessels by blocking the entry of certain ions (calcium ions) within them that causes narrowing. This allows blood to flow more smoothly across the blood vessels. It also reduces the strain on the heart and helps the heart to pump blood more efficiently with less pressure. Diltiazem effectively heals anal fissures, where it acts by relaxing the muscle around the anus (back passage). This action reduces pressure around the anal regions and increases blood flow which promotes healing of cuts and tears in the anus.
Common side effects of Diltiazem
- headache, dizziness
- flushing, itching of skin
- swelling of the fingers, ankles, feet (edema)
- constipation, indigestion, diarrhea, stomach pain
When to consult your doctor
Consult your doctor:
- in case of accidental overdosage
- if you experience slow or uneven heartbeat
- if you experience very fast, uneven, or forceful heartbeat (palpitations)
- if you experience signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
Health Tips for Diltiazem
- Follow a healthy lifestyle to manage your blood pressure effectively by eating a balanced diet low in salt, maintaining a healthy weight, exercise regularly, limiting alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking
- Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as it can interfere with the breakdown of Diltiazem in the body, leading to increased risk of side effects
- Drink an adequate amount of water to help prevent constipation
