Uses of Cefuroxime

Cefuroxime is used to treat various bacterial infections such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, otitis media (ear infections) urinary tract infections and skin and soft tissue infections.

Therapeutic Category

Cefuroxime: Cephalosporin Antibiotics

How Cefuroxime works

Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic. It binds to the bacterial cell wall and interfere with the bacterial cell wall synthesis. This weakens the bacterial cells and causes lysis of the bacteria, leading to bacterial cell death and decrease in spread of infection.

Common side effects of Cefuroxime

  • fungal infection
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • increased type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • increase in liver enzyme

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor if you experience:

  • severe, persistent uncontrollable diarrhea (pseudomembranous colitis)
  • severe allergic reactions, skin rashes and blistering and peeling of skin with fever, swelling of body parts, muscle pain
  • fungal infection of mouth, genitals, etc.

Health Tips for Cefuroxime

  • Cefuroxime must be taken with meals
  • Make sure to complete the full course of treatment with Cefuroxime without any interruption. Do not miss a dose or stop taking Cefuroxime without consulting your doctor as it may lead to growth of harmful bacteria within the body
  • Perform routine health checkups and blood tests as recommended by your doctor to achieve fast recovery
  • Avoid alcohol consumption while taking Cefuroxime as it may increase the risk of stomach irritation
  • It is important to drink an adequate amount of water while taking Cefuroxime to help prevent dehydration and support overall health. Stay hydrated by consuming plenty of water throughout the day unless otherwise advised by your doctor
  • Before taking Cefuroxime, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or having any liver, kidney or stomach problems as a precaution
  • Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy with Cefuroxime based on your age, body weight and severity of infection
  • Cefuroxime may reduce the effectiveness of the contraceptive pill. Therefore, you may also need to use a barrier method of contraception (such as condoms) for proper protection
