Leprosy - Overview
Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae bacteria. It is known to affect multiple body organs such as the skin, nerves, nasal lining, and eyes. The disease is transmitted through prolonged close contact with an untreated, infected individual. It primarily affects nerve endings, leading to sensory loss, muscle weakness, and in severe cases, deformities and disfigurement of the skin, face, and limbs. With timely and appropriate medical intervention, individuals affected by leprosy can lead normal, productive lives without the fear of transmission to others.
Types Of Leprosy
Leprosy has been categorised into different types under different systems. The World Health Organization classifies leprosy based on the type and the areas of the skin it affects.
- Paucibacillary: Symptoms include five or fewer lesions and no presence of bacterium skin samples
- Multibacillary. Symptoms include more than five lesions with bacterium present in the skin smear, or both conditions occurring at the same time
- Borderline Hansen’s disease: The disease shows symptoms between tuberculoid and lepromatous types.
Diagnosis
A physical exam is performed to confirm the signs and symptoms of the disease. A biopsy of the skin or nerve can be conducted for further confirmation. A lepromin skin test can also assist with the diagnosis.
Treatment For Leprosy
Once confirmed, antibiotics are the first line of treatment which works by killing the disease-causing bacteria. Usually, leprosy medicines contains a fixed combination of multiple antibiotics to increase efficacy of the treatment. Anti-inflammatory medicines are also prescribed depending on the severity of the disease.
Leprosy Tablets are available in the market which contain a composition of multiple drugs and referred to as multi-drug therapy. Widespread availability of leprosy tablets online has made the treatment easily accessible. It is essential to follow your doctor’s guidance to manage your condition better. With your doctor’s prescription, you can also buy leprosy tablets online or from a local pharmaceutical store.
