    Introduction About SPSON 40MG CAPSULE

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE contains Esomeprazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Proton pump inhibitors. It is used for the management of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) heartburn in adults and in adolescents above 12 years of age. SPSON 40MG CAPSULE also helps in managing stomach ulcers or upper part of the gut (intestine) that are infected with Helicobacter pylori bacteria and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) medicines in adults and in adolescents above 12 years of age. It is also used to manage Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (too much acid produced in the stomach caused by a growth in the pancreas).

    GERD is a disease where acid from the stomach escapes into the tube which connects your throat to your stomach (oesophagus) causing pain and inflammation.

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE is not recommended to be taken in patients with severe kidney and liver failure. SPSON 40MG CAPSULE should be taken only if considered clearly necessary by your doctor in pregnant women. It is not recommended for use in breast-feeding women. Consult your doctor for advice before taking the medicine.

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE is not recommended for children and adolescents aged less than 12 years. Consult your doctor for advice before taking the medicine.

    The most common side effects of taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE are headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea and vomiting. Contact your physician if any of the above symptoms worsens with time.

    Uses Of SPSON 40MG CAPSULE

    Used to manage:

    • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)  
    • Stomach ulcers and intestinal ulcers caused by helicobacter pylori infection and NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs)
    • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

    How SPSON 40MG CAPSULE Works

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of enzymes in the stomach cell. It hence reduces gastric acidity by blocking the final step in acid production and helps in relief of acid related indigestion and heartburn.

    How to use SPSON 40MG CAPSULE

    Take SPSON 40MG CAPSULE as advised by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow SPSON 40MG CAPSULE with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of SPSON 40MG CAPSULE

    Common

    • headache
    • diarrhoea
    • stomach pain
    • constipation
    • flatulence
    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • benign polyps in the stomach (masses of cells that form on the lining inside your stomach)

    Uncommon

    • swelling of the feet and ankles
    • troubled sleep
    • dizziness
    • tingling sensations (pins and needles)
    • sleepiness
    • dry mouth
    • skin rash, bumpy rash (hives) and itchy skin
    • fracture of joints such as hip, wrist or spine

    Rare

    • weakness, bruising or make infections due to reduced number of white cells or platelets
    • due to low levels of sodium in the blood causing weakness, being sick (vomiting) and cramps
    • agitation, confused or depressed
    • taste changes
    • blurred vision
    • suddenly feeling wheezy, short of breath (bronchospasm)
    • oral inflammation
    • fungal infection affecting the gut- thrush
    • yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness (liver problem)
    • hair loss (alopecia)
    • skin rash on exposure to sunshine
    • pain in joints (arthralgia) or muscle (myalgia)
    • lack of energy and feeling unwell and lacking energy
    • increased sweating

    Stop taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • sudden wheezing, swelling of lips, tongue and throat or body, rashes, fainting or difficulty in swallowing (severe allergic reaction)
    • reddening of the skin with blisters or peeling in the lips, eyes, mouth, nose and genitals indicative of Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
    • yellow skin, dark-coloured urine and tiredness indicative of liver problems
    • fever with a severely reduced general condition or fever with symptoms of a local infection such as pain in the neck, throat or mouth or difficulties in urinating

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache:  

    Rest and relax. Frequently hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the forehead if needed. Do not consume too much of alcohol. Consult your doctor if symptom worsens.

    Diarrhea:

    Drink plenty of liquids such as water, fruit juices or electrolytes to avoid loss of water (dehydration) in your body. Consult your doctor if the symptom persists for long time.

    Nausea and Vomiting:

    Try to take SPSON 40MG CAPSULE with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE should be used during pregnancy only if considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Breastfeeding

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as it is unclear whether it passes through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness and blurred vision after taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE. Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Alcohol

    Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol while taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE because it might increase the amount of acid in your stomach than normal which can irritate your stomach lining and worsen your symptoms.

    Kidney

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Liver

    Allergy

    Do not take SPSON 40MG CAPSULE if you are allergic to Esomeprazole or to any other proton pump inhibitor medicines.

    Others

    Before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you:

    • have ever had a skin reaction after taking medicine to manage acidity
    • are going to have a specific blood test (Chromogranin A)
    • are losing a lot of weight without reason
    • have problems swallowing
    • have stomach pain or indigestion
    • pass black stools (blood-stained faeces)
    • skin rashes especially after getting exposed in sun
    • have joint pains

    Use in pediatrics:

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE is not recommended to be taken in children and adolescents below 12 years of age. Your doctor will prescribe the right dose depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition. Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Use in geriatrics:

    SPSON 40MG CAPSULE should be taken with caution in elderly patients (65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking SPSON 40MG CAPSULE inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

    • antibiotics used to manage ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection (Ex. amoxicillin, clarithromycin)
    • medicines used to manage HIV infection (Ex. nelfinavir, atazanavir)
    • medicines used to manage blood clots (clopidogrel, warfarin)
    • anti-fungal medicines (Ex. ketoconazole, itraconazole or voriconazole)
    • medicine used to manage cancer (Ex. erlotinib)
    • anti-depressants used to manage depression (Ex. citalopram, imipramine, clomipramine or St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum)
    • medicines used to manage anxiety, relax muscles or in epilepsy (Ex. diazepam)
    • medicine used in epilepsy (Ex. phenytoin)
    • medicines used to manage intermittent pain in your legs while walking caused by an insufficient blood supply (Ex. cilostazol)
    • medicines used for indigestion and heartburn (Ex. cisapride)
    • digoxin (medicine used for heart problems)
    • methotrexate (a chemotherapy medicine used in high doses to manage cancer)
    • immunosuppressants for organ transplantation (Ex. tacrolimus)
    • medicines used for management of tuberculosis (Ex. rifampicin)
    • medicines that increase magnesium such as diuretics (Ex. hydrochlorothiazide, chlorthalidone)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally take more of SPSON 40MG CAPSULE, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose may include reduced physical (motor) activity, changes in respiratory rate, tremor, coordination-balance-speech disorders (ataxia) and intermittent fits (clonic convulsions).
