Introduction About SODAC INJECTION
SODAC INJECTION contains Sodium Bicarbonate, which belongs to the group of medicines called alkalinizing agents. It is used to manage metabolic acidosis (the correction of the body's acid-alkaline balance), which can occur in conditions such as severe kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal blood circulation, cardiac arrest, and drug overdoses such as barbiturates (where dissociation of the barbiturate-protein complex is desired), salicylate poisoning, methyl alcohol poisoning, and haemolytic reactions.
It is also used in severe diarrhea, which is often accompanied by a significant loss of bicarbonate. Additionally, it will be used to manage patients who have overused tricyclic antidepressants. It will be used only after the other resuscitation methods.
SODAC INJECTION is not recommended in patients with kidney failure or kidney stones, high blood pressure, heart failure, shallow or slow breathing than usual (hypoventilation), any blood abnormalities such as high sodium levels, low levels of calcium, potassium, or chloride, or if your blood is less acidic than usual, fluid retention. SODAC INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver diseases.
SODAC INJECTION should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. Contact your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION should be used with caution in neonates and children under 2 years of age. Serious side effects of receiving SODAC INJECTION are pain, burning, or swelling at the site of the injection, extreme irritability, muscle spasms or cramps, breathing difficulties, low potassium levels, which can cause twitching and muscle weakness, etc. Consult your doctor if your symptoms get worse or persist.
Uses Of SODAC INJECTION
Manage:
- metabolic acidosis (correct the acid-alkaline balance in the body) which can develop in conditions like severe kidney disease, uncontrolled diabetes, circulatory insufficiency due to shock or severe dehydration, extracorporeal blood circulation, cardiac arrest and in drug overdoses like, salicylate poisoning, methyl alcohol poisoning, etc
- severe diarrhea which is often accompanied by a significant loss of bicarbonate
- patients who have taken too much tricyclic antidepressant medicine
How SODAC INJECTION Works
SODAC INJECTION is a systemic alkalizer, which increases plasma bicarbonate, buffers the excess hydrogen ion concentration, and raises blood pH, thereby reversing the clinical effects of acidosis.
How to use SODAC INJECTION
SODAC INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous infusion. Your doctor will fix the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight, and medical condition.
Side Effects Of SODAC INJECTION
Rare
Stop receiving SODAC INJECTION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- pain, burning or swelling at the site of injection
- extreme irritability
- muscle spasms or cramps
- breathing difficulties
- low potassium levels can cause twitching, muscle weakness, "pins and needles" in the hands or feet, agitation, or an irregular heartbeat
- low blood sugar levels and a high sodium level in the blood can make you feel hunger, thirsty, anxious, confused, extremely irritated, shaky, or sweaty.
- excess acid in the blood, may cause rapid breathing (intracellular acidosis)
- a blood disease that causes an increase in volume of blood flow
- low calcium level may cause involuntary contraction of muscles
- inflammation due to accumulation of fluid under the skin
- bleeding inside the skull may occur in new-borns
- sodium bicarbonate leak out into the surrounding tissue may cause pain, redness, or skin irritation
- if the medication is not injected properly, skin around the injection site may die

Pregnancy
SODAC INJECTION should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed. Contact your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Breastfeeding
SODAC INJECTION should be given to a breastfeeding woman only if clearly needed. Contact your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Driving and Using Machines
SODAC INJECTION is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate machines.
Kidney
SODAC INJECTION is not recommended in patients with kidney failure or who have had kidney stones. Consult your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Liver
SODAC INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Allergy
Do not take SODAC INJECTION if you are allergic to sodium bicarbonate or other ingredients of the medicine.
Heart Disease
SODAC INJECTION is not recommended in patients with high blood pressure and heart failure. Consult your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Others
SODAC INJECTION is not recommended if you have:
- breathing is slower or more shallow than usual (hypoventilation)
- any blood abnormalities such as high sodium levels, low levels of calcium, potassium or chloride, or your blood is less acidic than usual
- suffer from fluid retention
Use in pediatrics:
SODAC INJECTION should be used with caution neonates and children under 2 years of age, because it may cause hypernatremia, decrease in cerebrospinal fluid pressure and possible intracranial haemorrhage. Consult your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Use in geriatrics:
SODAC INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients aged 65 years or above. Contact your doctor before receiving SODAC INJECTION.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before receiving SODAC INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- corticosteroids such as prednisone or corticotropin (medicines used to reduce swelling or to manage hormone problems)
- antibiotics like tetracyclines such as doxycycline (used to manage bacterial infections)
- quinidine, flecainide (medicines used to manage heart problems)
- dobutamine (medicines used to manage cardiogenic shock and heart failure)
- amphetamines (medicines used to manage mental problems and drowsiness)
- ephedrine and pseudoephedrine (medicines used to manage colds and asthma)
- potassium supplements
- parenteral solutions containing calcium
- ethacrynic acid, bumetanide, thiazides, or frusemide (medicines used to manage water retention and problems such as passing urine)
- mecamylamine (medicine used to manage high blood pressure)
- memantine (medicine used for Alzheimer’s disease)
- chlorpropamide (medicine used to manage diabetes mellitus)
- lithium, norepinephrine (medicines used to manage mood disorders)
- aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid) (medicine used to relieve pain, fever, and inflammation)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of SODAC INJECTION, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are spasms in the muscles, hands or feet, muscle cramps, extreme irritability, breathing difficulties, hyperventilation (over breathing), very sensitive to slight stimuli, twitching and high potassium levels in your blood may cause dizziness or tiredness.
