    Introduction About PTU 50MG TABLET

    PTU 50MG TABLET contains propylthiouracil, which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-thyroid drugs. It is used in the management of an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism).

    During management, your doctor will normally arrange for you to have regular blood tests to ensure PTU 50MG TABLET is working properly.

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease and kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used during pregnancy only if it is considered necessary by the doctor. Inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding or wish to start breast-feeding while taking PTU 50MG TABLET.

    The most common side effects of taking PTU 50MG TABLET are nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, taste disturbance, headache, hearing impairment, mild skin rashes, itching or reddening of the skin, hair loss, and pain or stiffness of your muscles or joints. Consult your doctor if any of the side effects worsen.

    How PTU 50MG TABLET Works

    PTU 50MG TABLET contains propylthiouracil, which works by reducing the production of a hormone called thyroxine by the thyroid gland (a gland located in the throat that produces thyroid hormone and helps to regulate growth and metabolism).

    How to use PTU 50MG TABLET

    Take PTU 50MG TABLET, with or without food, or as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending on your age, body weight, and disease condition. Do not stop taking PTU 50MG TABLET without informing your doctor.

    Side Effects Of PTU 50MG TABLET

    Common

    • nausea, vomiting, stomach upset
    • taste disturbance
    • headache
    • hearing impairment
    • mild skin rashes, itching, or reddening of the skin
    • hair loss
    • pain or stiffness in your muscles or joints

    Rare

    Stop taking PTU 50MG TABLET and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • symptoms of liver disease, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice (yellow discoloration of the skin or eyes), dark urine, pale stools, bleeding easily, itching or chills, loss of appetite, itching, pain on the right side of the stomach, and a brain disease that may affect your ability to think
    • symptoms of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, coughing, swelling of your lymph glands, arthritis (painful joints), pain in the lower back or other symptoms of kidney problems, inflammation of your blood vessels of the skin, and a rash across the bridge of your nose and across your cheeks
    • symptoms of a serious problem affecting the blood, such as a sore throat, fever, mouth ulcers, unusual bleeding or unexplained bruising, unusual tiredness or weakness, and feeling generally unwell

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or ORS (Oral Rehydrating Solution) and apply a pain-relieving balm to the head if necessary. Contact your doctor if your headache does not improve.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Take PTU 50MG TABLET with a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting do not improve.

    Skin rash Or Itching

    Avoid hot baths because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing while going outside. Use unscented moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. Contact your doctor if your rashes worsen.

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used during pregnancy only if it is considered necessary by the doctor. If you need to take PTU 50MG TABLET during pregnancy, you will be given the lowest effective dose, and your thyroid function will be checked every four to six weeks. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are planning to have a baby before taking it.

    Breastfeeding

    Inform your doctor if you are breast-feeding or wish to start breast-feeding while taking PTU 50MG TABLET. If you need to take PTU 50MG TABLET while you are breastfeeding, your doctor will manage you with the lowest effective dose, and the infant's development and thyroid function will be monitored.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Safe

    PTU 50MG TABLET does not affect your ability to drive or operate any machines.

    Kidney

    Use with Caution

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    Liver

    Use with Caution

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not take PTU 50MG TABLET if you are severely allergic to propylthiouracil or any other ingredients in this medicine.

    Use In Pediatrics

    Contraindicated

    PTU 50MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    Use In Geriatrics

    Use with Caution

    PTU 50MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking PTU 50MG TABLET.

    Others

    PTU 50MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have a rare hereditary condition affecting the way your body handles some sugars

    Interactions

    A. Drug-drug interactions:

    Before taking PTU 50MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

    • theophylline (a medicine used to manage asthma)
    • digoxin (used to manage heart problems)
    • beta-blockers (used to manage high blood pressure) Ex. acebutolol, labetalol
    • radioiodine (used to manage an overactive thyroid gland)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took more PTU 50MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage may cause vomiting, stomach pain, headache, fever, joint pain, itching, being pale, tiredness, frequent infections, unusual bleeding, or unexplained bruising. Too high a dose over a period of time can cause swelling of your thyroid (at the front of your neck), and your thyroid gland may become underactive, in which case you may feel tired, cold, or put on weight.
