Introduction About MODATEC 200MG TABLET
MODATEC 200MG TABLET contains Modafinil, which belongs to a group of medicines known as Psychostimulants. It is used for the management of Narcolepsy in adult patients. MODATEC 200MG TABLET is also used for the management of obstructive sleep apnoea (obstruction of the airway during sleep), circadian rhythm sleep disorder and shift work disorder.
Narcolepsy can be defined as a rare long-term neural condition in which the sleep-regulating mechanism of the brain is altered. Narcolepsy can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, lack of concentration, sleep attacks (suddenly falling asleep), cataplexy (temporary loss of muscle control leading to weakness and falling), sleep paralysis (it is a temporary inability to move or speak during waking up or falling asleep), excessive dreaming and waking in the middle of the night.
During management with MODATEC 200MG TABLET, your doctor may request a test for your heart called an electrocardiogram (ECG). You may also be monitored for your blood pressure and heart rate while you are taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET.
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients suffering from uncontrolled or moderate to severe high blood pressure and arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat) or who had a heart attack. MODATEC 200MG TABLET, should be used with caution in patients who have had liver diseases, kidney diseases, depression, anxiety, low mood, psychosis, mania, bipolar disorder, are alcoholic and recreational drug abuse.
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women. MODATEC 200MG TABLET is also not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age. Specific serious side effects may include depression, aggression or hostility towards other people or suicidal thoughts or other changes in your behaviour. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any such side effects.
The most common side effect of taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET are headache, dizziness, sleepiness, insomnia (inability to fall asleep), nervousness, anxiety, stuffy nose, back pain, extreme tiredness, weakness, palpitations, chest pain, dry mouth, redness of the face, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach-ache, indigestion, diarrhoea or constipation, blurred vision, irritability, numbness or tingling sensation in hands or feet, abnormal liver enzymes. Contact your doctor if any of your side effects get worse.

How MODATEC 200MG TABLET Works
Modafinil is a psychostimulant which acts on Orexin neurons. Orexin neurons are nerve cells found in the brain which regulate sleep/wake states. Modafinil activates orexin neurons and hence induces wakefulness and reduces the likelihood that you will have sleep attacks.
How to use MODATEC 200MG TABLET
Take MODATEC 200MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Consume the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.
Side Effects Of MODATEC 200MG TABLET
Common
- headache, sleepiness and dizziness
- high blood pressure
- insomnia (inability to fall asleep)
- extreme tiredness, weakness
- palpitations
- chest pain
- dry mouth, redness of the face
- loss of appetite, nausea, stomach-ache, indigestion, diarrhoea or constipation
- blurred vision

Uncommon
- back pain, neck pain, muscle pain, muscle weakness, leg cramps, joint pain, tremors, twitching
- vertigo
- sweating
- increased cough, shortness of breath or asthma
- disrupted sleep cycle, abnormal dreams
- slurred speech
- vomiting
- swallowing difficulties, swollen tongue, mouth ulcers
- swollen hands and feet
- migraine
- hay fever – runny/itchy nose, watery eyes
- muscle tension, difficulty moving muscles smoothly or other movement problems lack of coordination
- rashes, acne, itching
- increased appetite, weight changes, altered taste or thirst, excess wind, acid reflux from the stomach
- altered sex drive
- nosebleed, sinusitis, sore throat
- abnormal menstruation
- restlessness with increased body movements
- altered vision, dryness in eyes
- polyuria (increased frequency of urination)
- abnormal white blood cells
- increased blood sugar levels
- high blood cholesterol
- changes in blood pressure (high or low), abnormal heart trace (ECG) and irregular or unusually slow heartbeat
Rare
Stop taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:
- signs or symptoms of angioedema or anaphylaxis (Ex. swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat causing difficulty in swallowing or breathing and wheeziness or hoarseness)
- fever, skin rash, severe itching, blistering or peeling of skin, ulcers in mouth, eyes, nose and genitals and abnormal blood test results
- chest pain
- mood swings or abnormal thoughts
- aggressive behaviour or hostility
- forgetfulness or confusion
- extreme happiness, over-excitement or hyperactivity
- anxiety or nervousness
- depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviour
- agitation or psychosis, delusions, feeling detached or numb, personality disorder hallucinations, extreme increase in activity and talking (mania)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea, vomiting:
Take the medicine, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if nausea and vomiting worsen.
Itchy skin:
Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when going outdoors or use unscented moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the skin. Contact your doctor if the itching persists.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. Eat small meals but take them frequently. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. Contact your doctor if the stomach pain does not improve.
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of water or fruit juices, to keep you hydrated. Don’t take any medicine on your own to manage diarrhoea. Contact your doctor if diarrhoea worsens.
Constipation:
Eat plenty of fiber-rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. Drink water and exercise regularly. Contact your doctor if constipation persists.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head if needed. Contact your doctor if your headache does not improve.
Dizziness or drowsiness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid alcohol consumption as it aggravates dizziness or drowsiness. Contact your doctor if dizziness or drowsiness worsens.

Pregnancy
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women as it may cause harm to the unborn baby. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Breastfeeding
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Driving and Using Machines
MODATEC 200MG TABLET causes dizziness, sleepiness and blurred vision which can affect your driving ability. Do not drive or operate machines after taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET.

Alcohol
Do not consume alcohol while taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET.

Kidney
MODATEC 200MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Liver
MODATEC 200MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver disease. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Allergy
Do not take MODATEC 200MG TABLET if you are allergic to Modafinil, lactose or other ingredients in the medicine.

Heart Disease
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias), suffering from uncontrolled moderate to severe high blood pressure or having a heart attack. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Others
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you have:
- anxiety and severe agitation
Before taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have:
- you have or have had depression, anxiety, low mood, psychosis, mania or bipolar disorder
- had drug problems in the past
- rare hereditary conditions such as galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency and Glucose-galactose malabsorption
Use in Paediatrics:
MODATEC 200MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children below 18 years of age as its safety is not yet established in children. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Use in Geriatrics:
MODATEC 200MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients aged above 65 years of age as it may require dose adjustments. Consult your doctor before taking it.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking MODATEC 200MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:
- hormonal contraceptives such as contraceptive pills Ex. Ethinyl oestradiol, implants, intrauterine devices or patches (medicines and devices used for the management of pregnancy)
- omeprazole (a medicine used for the management of acidity, stomach ulcers etc)
- indinavir, ritonavir (a medicine used to manage HIV infection)
- ciclosporin (a medicine used for immune system suppression, to manage arthritis or psoriasis)
- carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin (medicines used for the management of seizures)
- amitriptyline, citalopram, fluoxetine (medicines used for the management of depression)
- diazepam, triazolam (medicines used for the management of anxiety)
- warfarin (medicines used for the management of blood clotting)
- amlodipine, verapamil, propranolol (medicines used for the management of high blood pressure)
- atorvastatin, simvastatin (medicines used for managing high cholesterol levels)
- itraconazole, ketoconazole (medicines used to manage fungal infections)
- phenytoin or S-mephenytoin (medicines used to manage fits)
- antipyrine (a medicine used to manage ear infections and pain)
- medicines used to manage attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (such as dextroamphetamine and methylphenidate)
Overdosage:
In case you or anybody else accidentally takes too much of MODATEC 200MG TABLET consult the doctor immediately. Symptoms of overdosage are feeling sick, disoriented, confused, restless, Insomnia, agitated, nervousness or anxious, difficulty sleeping, hallucinations, excitation high blood pressure, palpitations, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and chest pain.
