    Introduction About MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is a combination of Ergotamine and Caffeine which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-migraine agents. It is used to manage migraine headaches.

    Migraine is a type of severe headache which causes throbbing pain usually on one side of the head. It is typically characterized by severe headache with nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. It happens due to abnormal widening of the blood vessels within the head.

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET can be taken with or without food. Before taking MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have any lung, liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure or any problems that may affect blood flow to the extremities (such as Raynaud’s Phenomenon) as a precaution.

    Do not take MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET without consulting your doctor if you have severe muscle weakness or paralysis or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or taking antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin) or HIV medicines (such as ritonavir etc.) while taking this medicine as it may increase the risk of side effects. The most common side effects of taking MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET are dizziness and stomach pain. Consult your doctor if it troubles you.

    How MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET Works

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET contains two medicines namely caffeine and ergotamine. Both ergotamine and caffeine acts by narrowing the blood vessels supplying the head. This action manages migraine attack. Additionally, caffeine can also improve the actions of ergotamine and reduces tiredness among the affected patients.

    How to use MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET

    Take MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET can be taken with or without meals.

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET

    Common

    • dizziness
    • nausea, vomiting, stomach pain

    Uncommon

    • tingling and numbness of body parts
    • bluish coloration of body
    • cold hands and foot
    • diarrhea
    • painful limbs, weak muscles

    Rare

    • vertigo (spinning sensation)
    • slow or fast heart rate
    • high blood pressure
    • skin rash, itching
    • muscle pain

    Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side-effects:

    • skin redness, peeling and blistering of the skin
    • signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
    • chest pain and shortness of breath
    • numbness or tingling in the fingers and toes, muscle pain in the arms and legs, weakness in the legs, pain in the chest or temporary speeding or slowing of the heart rate, swelling or itching

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Dizziness:

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines if you experience dizziness. Do not consume alcohol, it can aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve.

    Nausea and Vomiting:

    Take MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

    Stomach pain:

    Avoid spicy foods. Stick to simple meals. Drink plenty of water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Consult your doctor if the symptom worsens.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women and in women who are trying to become pregnant as it may cause serious harm to the growing baby. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it. Women of childbearing potential must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while taking MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET.

    Breastfeeding

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breast feeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or use machines if your ability is affected by MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET.

    Alcohol

    Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET.

    Kidney

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with kidney diseases. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Liver

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with liver diseases. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Allergy

    Do not take MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET if you are allergic to Caffeine or Ergotamine or to any other ergot alkaloids.

    Lungs

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with pleural fibrosis (thickening of the outer layer of the lungs). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Heart Disease

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Others

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have peripheral vascular disease (any problem that affects blood flow to hands and legs)
    • have sepsis (blood infection)
    • have severe muscle weakness or paralysis
    • have headache due to eye problems

    Use in paediatrics:

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) due to lack of safety data. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Use in geriatrics:

    MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

    Before taking MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

    • macrolide antibiotics (used to manage bacterial infections) such as erythromycin, troleandomycin, clarithromycin
    • protease inhibitors (used to manage HIV infection) such as ritonavir, nelfinavir, indinavir, saquinavir
    • medicines used to manage fungal infections (such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole, clotrimazole, fluconazole)
    • metronidazole (a medicine used to manage worm infections) 
    • other medicines act on the adrenergic system such as used to manage blocked nose, cough, breathing problems or heart problems (such as phenylpropanolamine, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine, xylometazoline, adrenaline, noradrenaline, isoprenaline, methoxamine, salbutamol)
    • fluoroquinolones and rifampicin used in the management of bacterial infections.
    • other vasoconstrictors are used to manage migraine such as lamotriptan, sumatriptan, rizatriptan, eletriptan, zolmitriptan, dihydroergotamine
    • nicotine (used to manage smoking addiction)
    • beta-blockers (used to manage heart problems) such as atenolol, propranolol
    • estrogen-based contraceptives, Ex: estradiol
    • medicines used to manage depression such as fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, nefazodone, fluvoxamine, venlafaxine
    • mexiletine (used to manage irregular heartbeats)
    • quinupristin/dalfopristin (used to manage skin infections)
    • zileuton (used to reduce asthma attack and reduce symptoms)

    B. Drug-Food interaction:

    Grapefruit juices and foods containing caffeine should be avoided as they may interact with MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET.

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else took more of MIGRANIL EC 1MG TABLET, consult your doctor or go to nearby hospital immediately. Symptoms of overdose might include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, thirst, muscle pain, cold and pale skin, itching, a rapid and weak pulse, slow or fast heart rate, chest pain, rise and/or fall of blood pressure, confusion, dizziness, headache, depression, sleepiness, convulsion, numbness, tingling and pain in the extremities, blue discoloration of skin and breathing difficulties.
