    Introduction About MEFTAL MR TABLET

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is a combination of Mefenamic Acid and Tizanidine which belongs to the group of medicines called Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and Skeletal Muscle Relaxants respectively. It is used in the management of painful menstrual periods and muscle spasms.

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe kidney, heart or liver disease, peptic ulcer, bleeding in stomach, severe gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease, hereditary problems of glucose-galactose malabsorption, galactose intolerance or lapp lactase deficiency.  

    MEFTAL MR TABLET should be used with caution in patients having lung diseases, upset stomach, connective tissue disorders, epilepsy, dehydration problems or going to have a major operation. MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women.

    This medicine is not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age and it should be used with caution in elderly patients due to increased risk of side effects.

    The most common side-effects of taking MEFTAL MR TABLET are drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, reduced blood pressure and dry mouth. Consult your doctor if any of these worsen or doesn’t improve.

    How MEFTAL MR TABLET Works

    MEFTAL MR TABLET helps in managing painful menstrual periods and muscle spasms where mefenamic Acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which effectively reduces pain, swelling and redness by blocking the inflammatory and pain pathways. Tizanidine is a skeletal muscle relaxant and acts on the central nervous system and reduces the release of substances that cause muscle stiffness thus releasing the stiffness and restriction of the muscles.

    How to use MEFTAL MR TABLET

    Take MEFTAL MR TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of MEFTAL MR TABLET for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of MEFTAL MR TABLET

    Common

    • drowsiness, dizziness
    • tiredness
    • reduced blood pressure and heart rate
    • dry mouth

    Rare

    • hallucinations
    • difficulty in sleeping
    • nausea, upset stomach
    • muscle weakness

    Stop taking MEFTAL MR TABLET and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side-effects:

    • difficulty in breathing or swallowing, swelling affecting the face, lips, tongue or throat
    • severe itching of the skin associated with a red rash or raised lumps
    • blisters occurring on the mouth, eyes, and genital region, and patchy areas of rash, peeling of skin
    • diarrhoea, passing blood in your stools, black tarry stools
    • vomiting any blood or dark particles that resemble coffee grounds
    • indigestion, heartburn, abdominal pain, other abnormal stomach symptoms, nausea
    • unusual bruising or bleeding such as nosebleeds, pinpoint red spots on the skin, unusual purple bruise like rash on the skin or in the mouth
    • signs of anaemia (feeling tired, breathless, looking pale)
    • fever, mouth ulcers, sore throat, repeated infections, or infections that will not go away
    • seizures
    • signs of low sodium levels (headache, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps)
    • sudden headache, fever, sensitivity to bright light, stiff neck, drowsiness and muscle pain, with or without a rash
    • inflammation of the pancreas (high blood pressure, pain behind the ribs radiating towards the back, lying down, nausea, vomiting and fever)
    • yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale faeces and dark urine, unexplained persistent nausea, stomach problems, loss of appetite or unusual tiredness
    • sudden loss or blurring of vision, loss of colour vision, eye pain which worsens with eye movement
    • heart failure
    • changes in kidney function (such as fever, rash, nausea, aches and pains, passing more or less urine than usual, passing red urine or passing urine at night)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Nausea:

    Take this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich, fried or spicy foods. Talk to your doctor if the symptom doesn’t improve.

    Dizziness:

    Try to rest and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you feel dizzy. Limit consumption of alcohol, as it can aggravate dizziness. Consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

    Dry mouth:

    Sip water regularly and other sugar free liquids. Do not use mouthwashes that contain alcohol because they can make your mouth dry, use mouthwash that is used only for dry mouth. Limit your caffeine intake. Avoid smoking or using tobacco products. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    MEFTAL MR TABLET should be used with caution in first 6 months in pregnant women as it will be passed to the unborn baby. It is not recommended for use in last 3 months of pregnancy as it may delay the onset of labour and increase the chances of bleeding in mother and baby. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Breastfeeding

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it passes through mother’s milk and can affect the baby. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel drowsy, dizzy, fatigued, have a low blood pressure or vision problems after taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Alcohol

    Avoid the use of alcohol while taking MEFTAL MR TABLET as it may worsen the sedative affects and increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

    Kidney

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe kidney disease. It should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Liver

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Allergy

    Do not take MEFTAL MR TABLET if you are allergic to Mefenamic Acid, Tizanidine or other anti-inflammatory medicines (such as aspirin, ibuprofen, celecoxib).

    Lungs

    MEFTAL MR TABLET should be used with caution in patients having lung diseases such as asthma or a history of asthma. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Heart Disease

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe heart disease or had a heart bypass surgery. It should be used with caution in patients with heart problems. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Others

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have peptic ulcer, bleeding in stomach, severe gastritis
    • have inflammatory bowel disease
    • have rare hereditary problems of glucose-galactose malabsorption, galactose intolerance or lapp lactase deficiency

    Before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET tell your doctor if you:

    • stomach or digestive problems, upset stomach after taking painkillers (such as aspirin)
    • have connective tissue disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus
    • have epilepsy
    • have bleeding disorder
    • are scheduled to have a major surgery
    • are dehydrated
    • previously had a stroke or have conditions such as (high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol)
    • are a smoker
    • have lactose intolerance

    Use in paediatrics:

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

     Use in geriatrics:

    MEFTAL MR TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above) due to the increased risk of side effects. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.

    Interactions

    A. Drug – Drug Interactions:

    Before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

    • medicines used to manage abnormal heart rhythm (Ex. amiodarone, mexiletine, propafenone, digoxin, sotalol), reduce high blood pressure (Ex. atenolol, ramipril, valsartan, diltiazem, chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide)
    • medicines used to manage digestive ulcers (Ex. cimetidine)
    • quinolones and fluoroquinolone antibiotics (Ex. enoxacin, pefloxacin, norfloxacin), aminoglycosides (Ex. gentamycin) (used to manage bacterial infections)
    • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Ex. ibuprofen, diclofenac), painkiller (Ex. refecoxib)
    • medicines used to manage blood clots (Ex. ticlopidine, aspirin), used to thin blood (Ex. warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel)
    • sleeping tablets (Ex. temazepam), antidepressants (Ex. paroxetine), used to manage mood swings and depression (Ex. lithium)
    • oral contraceptive pills, medicines used for abortion in early pregnancy (Ex. mifepristone)
    • medicines used to manage diabetes (Ex. glipizide, glibenclamide)
    • medicines used to suppress the immune system (Ex. ciclosporin, tacrolimus, methotrexate)
    • medicines used for HIV (Ex. zidovudine)
    • medicines used to protect kidneys (Ex. probenecid)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of MEFTAL MR TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Overdosage symptoms of MEFTAL MR TABLET include fits, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, disorientation, excitation, coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time), tiredness, ringing in the ears, fainting, dizziness, low blood pressure, pinpoint pupils, breathing problems, restlessness and sleepiness.

    How to manage if I forget to take a dose of MEFTAL MR TABLET?

    If you forget to take a dose of MEFTAL MR TABLET, take it as soon as you remember but, if its almost the time for your usual dose then do not take double dose to make up for the missed one.

    Can MEFTAL MR TABLET be used in patients with liver problems?

    MEFTAL MR TABLET is not recommended for use in patients having severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Your doctor may monitor your liver function before and during management with this medicine to manage the risk of any unusual effects. Consult your doctor before taking MEFTAL MR TABLET.
