Introduction About LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION is a combination of Cilastatin and Imipenem which belong to the group of medicines called Carbapenem Antibiotics. It is used to kill a wide range of bacterial infection in various parts of the body in adults and children. It is used in the management of complicated infections in the stomach, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue, lung infections (pneumonia) or infections during or post-delivery.
It may be used to manage patients with low white blood cell count having fever that may be caused due to a bacterial infection or in patients having bacterial infection of blood.
Before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you have colitis or other gastrointestinal disease, kidney or urinary problems, any central nervous system disorders such as localized tremors or epileptic seizures and liver problems.
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant and breast-feeding women unless advised by the doctor. It is not recommended for use in children aged under 1 year and children with kidney problems.
The most common side effects associated with the use of LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, swelling and redness along a vein (extremely tender to touch) and rash. Inform your doctor immediately if any of the side effect worsens or persist for a long period of time.
Uses Of LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION
Manages one or more following types of the infection:
- complicated infections of the abdomen, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue infections
- lung infections (pneumonia)
- infections during or post-delivery
- suspected bacterial infection with low white blood cell count and fever
- bacterial infection of the blood associated with other infections
How LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION Works
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION contains imipenem a beta-lactam antibiotic that works by inhibiting the penicillin-binding proteins thereby managing the bacterial cell from synthesizing the cell wall and ultimately leading to cell-death. Cilastatin present in LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION is a renal dehydropeptidase-1 inhibitor which is administered with imipenem to block its metabolism that would have otherwise caused necrosis of some parts of the kidney. Hence cilastatin and imipenem together helps to manage bacterial infection.
How to use LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous injection over a period of 20-60 minutes depending on the dose. Your doctor will decide the dose, duration and frequency of LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION therapy for you depending on your age, body weight and severity of the condition.
Side Effects Of LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION
Common
- nausea, vomiting
- diarrhoea
- swelling and redness along a vein that is extremely tender to touch
- rash
Uncommon
- Local skin redness
- local pain and firm lump formation at the injection site
- skin itchiness, hives
- fever
- tremors and uncontrolled twitching of muscles
- seizures
- psychic disturbances (such as mood swings and impaired judgment)
- hallucinations, confusion
- dizziness, sleepiness
- Low blood pressure
Rare
- fungal infection (such as candidiasis)
- stains on the teeth and/or tongue
- inflammation of the colon associated with severe diarrhoea
- taste disturbances
- alteration in the amount of urine, changes in urine colour
- disease of the brain, tingling sensation (pins and needles), localised tremor
- hearing loss
Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects while receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION:
- allergic reactions (symptoms include rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and/or low blood pressure)
- skin peeling (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
- severe skin reactions (stevens-johnson syndrome and erythema multiforme)
- severe skin rash with loss of skin and hair (exfoliative dermatitis)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or vomiting:
Stick to simple meals while receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION. Avoid eating oily rich, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Inform your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Diarrhoea:
Drink lot of fluids such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. Inform your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Pregnancy
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION is not recommended for use during pregnancy unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION.
Breastfeeding
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless considered clearly necessary as it may pass into the breast milk and may affect the baby. Consult your doctor before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive or operate any machineries after receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION as it may cause side effects such as hallucination, dizziness, sleepiness and spinning sensation. Consult your doctor before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION.
Kidney
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney or urinary problems. Consult your doctor before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION.
Liver
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION.
Allergy
Do not receive LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Cilastatin, Imipenem or any other ingredients of this medicine.
Others
Before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION tell your doctor if you have:
- colitis or other gastrointestinal disease

Interactions
A. Drug-Drug Interactions:
Before receiving LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- ganciclovir (medicine used to manage viral infections)
- valproic acid or sodium valproate (medicine used to manage epilepsy, bipolar disorder, migraine or schizophrenia)
- warfarin (medicine used as blood thinner
Overdosage:
LUPINEM 500MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms such as seizures (fits), confusion, tremors, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure and slow heart rate.
