Introduction About FOLITAS 5MG TABLET

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET contains Folic Acid (Vitamin B9) which belongs to the group of medicines called Folic Acid supplements. It is used for the management of anaemia due to lack of folic acid (in adults and children), during pregnancy, due to damaged red blood cells or certain medicines and in patients on kidney dialysis.  

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET is not recommended for use in patients suffering from cancer, pernicious anaemia (caused by vitamin B12 deficiency anaemia) and unmanageed vitamin B12 deficiency.  

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with epilepsy, folate dependent tumour, undergoing haemodialysis due to kidney failure and receiving coronary stent (a tube that is inserted in the artery that leads to the heart to manage blockages).   

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET can be used in pregnant women and should be used with caution in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine. 

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in children. Your child’s doctor may adjust the dose based on child’s age and body weight. 

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET may cause side effects such as loss of appetite, nausea, bloating and flatulence (gas). Consult your doctor if any of the side effects bothers you or worsens. 

Uses Of FOLITAS 5MG TABLET

Used in the management of:

• anaemia due to a lack of folic acid in adults and children
• anaemia in pregnancy
• anaemia due to damaged red blood cells
• anaemia in patients on kidney dialysis
• anaemia due to certain medicines

How FOLITAS 5MG TABLET Works

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET is converted into tetrahydro folic acid and methyl tetrahydrofolate which are required for the maintenance of normal production of red blood cells, hence it helps to manage anaemia. It also helps in proper spinal cord and brain development of unborn babies during pregnancy.

How to use FOLITAS 5MG TABLET

Take FOLITAS 5MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Consume the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

How To Manage Side Effects

Nausea:

Stick to simple meals while taking this medicine. Do not lie down or sleep immediately after eating. Avoid eating oil rich, fried or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Pregnancy

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET can be used in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Breastfeeding

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Driving and Using Machines

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET does not affect your ability to drive or operate any machines.

Alcohol

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking FOLITAS 5MG TABLET.

Kidney

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients undergoing haemodialysis due to kidney failure. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Allergy

Do not take FOLITAS 5MG TABLET if you are allergic to folic acid or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Heart Disease

FOLITAS 5MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients receiving coronary stent (a tube that is inserted in the artery that leads to the heart to manage blockages). Consult your doctor before taking it.

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking FOLITAS 5MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

• fluorouracil (used to manage cancer)
• trimethoprim, sulphonamides (Ex. sulfamethoxazole), chloramphenicol (medicines used to manage bacterial infections)
• antacids containing aluminium or magnesium, edible clay (medicines used to manage acidity)
• preparations containing zinc such as vitamins or food supplements
• cholestyramine (used to manage high cholesterol)
• methotrexate, sulfasalazine (used to manage crohn’s disease)
• triamterene (used to manage high blood pressure)
• phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, sodium valproate, carbamazepine (medicines used for the management of seizures)
• lithium (used to manage mental problems)
• aspirin (medicine used to thin the blood)
• general anaesthetic (medicine used during surgeries)
• proguanil and pyrimethamine (used to manage malaria)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of FOLITAS 5MG TABLET, contact your doctor immediately or go to a hospital straight away. Overdosage symptoms of FOLITAS 5MG TABLET includes bitter taste, loss of appetite, nausea, flatulence (gas), nightmares, agitation, depression. The frequency and intensity of seizure attacks may increase in patients taking antiepileptic medicine (especially phenobarbital, phenytoin or primidone).
