    Introduction About FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET contains Febuxostat, which belongs to a group of medicines called Antigout agents. It is used in the management of gout (common and complex form of arthritis that occurs when too much uric acid crystallises and deposits in the joints, resulting in sudden, severe attacks of pain, swelling, redness and tenderness in one or more joints, most often in the big toe). It is also used to manage accumulation of high blood levels of uric acid in the blood.

    Before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney, heart, thyroid problems and undergoing management for Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET is not recommended for use by pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, children, and adolescents. FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET should be used with caution by elderly patients.

    The common side effects of taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET are abnormal liver test results, diarrhoea, headache, rash, nausea, increase in gout symptoms, localized swelling due to retention of fluids in tissues (oedema). Consult your doctor immediately if any of your symptoms gets worse.

    How FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET Works

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET works by blocking the action of enzyme called xanthine oxidase, which is involved in the process of converting hypoxanthine into uric acid (purine metabolism pathway). This type of action reduces high uric acid level in gout and blood cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy management.

    How to use FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET

    Take FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET with a glass of water and do not chew or crush the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight.

    Side Effects Of FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET

    Common

    • liver function test results appear abnormal
    • diarrhea
    • headache
    • skin rash
    • nausea
    • exaggerated gout symptoms
    • oedema

    Uncommon

    • decreased appetite
    • signs of diabetes (blood sugar level changes, excessive thirst, increased blood fat levels and weight)
    • loss of sex drive
    • difficulty in sleeping
    • sleepiness
    • dizziness, numbness, tingling, reduced or altered sensation
    • altered taste sensation, decreased sense of smell
    • abnormal ECG, irregular or rapid heartbeats and palpitation
    • hot flushes (e.g., redness of the face or neck), increased blood pressure
    • cough, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or pain, inflammation of nasal passage and/or throat and bronchitis
    • dry mouth, abdominal pain or wind, heartburn, constipation, vomiting, stomach discomfort
    • skin itching, and small red or purple spots on the skin, covered with small confluent bumps, areas of redness and spots on the skin
    • inflammation of joints usually accompanied by pain, swelling and/or stiffness,
    • blood in the urine, abnormal frequent urination, abnormal urine tests (increased level of proteins in the urine)
    • fatigue, chest pain, chest discomfort
    • stones in gallbladder or bile ducts (cholelithiasis)
    • increase thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level
    • blood chemistry changes or abnormal amount of blood cells or platelets
    • kidney stones
    • erectile dysfunction

    Rare

    • nervousness
    • feeling thirsty
    • ringing sensation in the ears
    • blurred vision, change in vision
    • hair loss
    • ulcers in mouth
    • increased sweating
    • weight decrease, increased appetite, or uncontrolled loss of appetite
    • muscle and/or joint stiffness
    • urgent need to urinate
    • changes or decrease in urine amount due to inflamed kidneys
    • inflamed liver, yellowing of the skin or liver damage
    • increased level of creatine phosphokinase in blood
    • sudden cardiac death

    Stop taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • signs of Stevens- Johnson syndrome/ toxic epidermal necrolysis (serious skin rashes characterized by formation of blisters and shedding of the skin and inner surfaces of mouth and genitals, painful ulcers in the mouth and/or genital areas, accompanied by fever, sore throat, fatigue)
    • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
    • sings of drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (extensive skin rash in association with enlarged lymph nodes, liver enlargement, raising of the white cells count)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Nausea or vomiting:

    Take FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.

    Flatulence:

    Eat smaller and more frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly, and exercise regularly. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.

    Constipation:

    Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.

    Diarrhoea:

    Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juice, to keep yourself hydrated. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor.

    Stomach pain:

    Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller and more frequent meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not improve, contact your doctor immediately.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET is generally not recommended for use by pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking the medicine.

    Breastfeeding

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET is generally not recommended for use by breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy, sleepy, blurred vision and numbness or tingling sensation after taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Kidney

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET should be used with caution in patients with having or have had kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Liver

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET should be used with caution in patients who have or had liver disease or liver function test abnormalities. Consult your doctor for advice before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Allergy

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET is not recommended for use if you are allergic to febuxostat. It should also be used with caution in patients having history of serious allergic reaction to Allopurinol.

    Heart Disease

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET should be used with caution in patients having or have had heart failure or heart problems or stroke. Consult your doctor for advice before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Others

    Before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

    • are being managed for Lesch-Nyhan syndrome
    • have thyroid problems

    Use in Paediatrics:

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age). Consult your doctor before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Use in Geriatrics:

    FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor for advice before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

    Before taking FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • mercaptopurine (used to manage cancer)
    • azathioprine (used to reduce immune response)
    • theophylline (used to manage asthma)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of FEBUSTAT 20 TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
