    Introduction About EFFENAC AB TABLET

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is a combination of Acebrophylline and N-Acetylcysteine which belongs to the group of medicines called Bronchodilators and Mucolytics respectively. It is used in the management of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It can also be used to manage inflammation of the airways (such as bronchitis or cystic fibrosis) and reduce the onset of other complications caused due to mucus obstruction in the airways such as bronchospasm (paralysis of airways) and wheezing or shortness of breath.

    Take EFFENAC AB TABLET preferably with meals or as advised by your physician. Before taking EFFENAC AB TABLET inform your doctor if you have any liver, kidney or heart problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have fits, stomach ulcers, viral infections, hypertension or hyperthyroidism as a precaution.

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant and in breastfeeding women. The most common side effects of taking EFFENAC AB TABLET are epigastric pain, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea and constipation. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects trouble you.

    It is used to manage and prevent:

    • Asthma & COPD
    • Bronchitis (inflammation of the airways)
    • Cystic Fibrosis
    • Bronchospasm and shortness of breath

    How EFFENAC AB TABLET Works

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is a bronchodilator with anti-inflammatory and mucolytic properties. It blocks the release of certain chemicals (such as phosphodiesterase) in the respiratory tract that triggers airway inflammation, swelling and narrowing. As a result, it widens the airways, and reduces airway inflammation. It also loosens the mucus accumulated in the airways which allows the air to pass through more freely through the airways and makes breathing easier.

    How to use EFFENAC AB TABLET

    Take EFFENAC AB TABLET preferably with meals or as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Do not stop taking EFFENAC AB TABLET once your symptoms subside without consulting your doctor.

    Side Effects Of EFFENAC AB TABLET

    Common

    • stomach pain or discomfort, heartburn, loss of appetite
    • transient nausea, dizziness
    • vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation
    • drowsiness
    • skin rash or itching
    • breathing difficulties
    • nasal inflammation

    Uncommon

    • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
    • headache
    • increased heart rate
    • swelling or lips
    • fever
    • low blood pressure

    Rare

    • indigestion
    • shortness of breath
    • numbness of arm and legs
    • lack of sleep
    • fast heart rate
    • high or low blood pressure
    • sugar in urine
    • increased blood sugar levels

    Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • signs of allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat and tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
    • severe allergic skin reactions (such as skin rash, redness, blistering and peeling of skin, ulcers especially in areas such as face, genitals, nose, mouth or lips along with fever and flu-like symptoms)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Nausea and Vomiting

    Take EFFENAC AB TABLET with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your symptom worsens.

    Dizziness:

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnancy. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Breastfeeding

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    EFFENAC AB TABLET usually does not affect your ability to drive or operate any machinery. However, do not drive or handle any heavy tools or machines if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking EFFENAC AB TABLET.

    Kidney

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney problems. It should be used with caution in patients with other kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Liver

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Allergy

    Do not take EFFENAC AB TABLET if you are allergic to N-Acetylcysteine, Acebrophylline or to any other methylxanthines (such as theophylline, doxophylline).

    Heart Disease

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in patients suffering from myocardial infarction or arrythmias. It should be used with caution in patients with heart failure or any other heart problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Others

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • have hypotension (low blood pressure)
    • have fluid and electrolyte imbalance

    Before taking EFFENAC AB TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

    • have chronic alcoholism (addiction to alcohol)
    • have any viral infections
    • have an over-active thyroid gland
    • have hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • have ulcers in the stomach and/or intestines
    • have fits (seizures)
    • have any allergic conditions

    Use in paediatrics:

    EFFENAC AB TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Use in geriatrics:

    EFFENAC AB TABLET should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    A. Drug - Drug interactions:

    Before taking EFFENAC AB TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

    • allopurinol (a medicine used to manage gout)
    • cimetidine (a medicine used to manage stomach ulcers)
    • medicines used to manage bacterial infections (such as ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, doxycycline, gentamycin, azithromycin, amoxicillin)
    • corticosteroids (used to manage pain and inflammation) such as prednisolone
    • diltiazem, verapamil (a medicine used to manage heart problems)
    • frusemide (a medicine used to reduce edema and blood pressure by increasing urine output)
    • isoprenaline (a medicine used to manage slow heart rate)
    • oral contraceptives (birth control pills) such as ethinylestradiol
    • thiabendazole (a medicine used to manage worm infections)
    • medicines used to manage cough (such as dexamethasone)
    • activated charcoal (a medicine used to manage poisoning)
    • glyceryl trinitrate (a medicine used to manage chest pain)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took more EFFENAC AB TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include nausea, vomiting, upper stomach pain, restlessness, fits, fast heart rate and hyperactivity.
