BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE contains Ampicillin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage bacterial infections of the ears, nose, throat, respiratory tract (bronchus, lungs), urinary tract, genital tract, stomach, blood, brain or skin and soft tissues.
It can also be used to manage typhoid fever, meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain), peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach) and endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart and its valves).
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE should be taken on an empty stomach. It is important to take BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE for the stipulated duration instructed by your doctor to achieve better results even if you feel better during the midway of the therapy. Failing to complete the full course of the therapy or skipping doses in between the therapy may not result in adequate infection control.
During therapy with BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE, your doctor will periodically monitor your health condition through several blood tests/urine tests to access the improvement in your condition and to reduce the risk of unwanted side effects. BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE is suitable for use in adults and in children (aged 10 years or older; weighing 20 kg or more).
Before taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE inform your doctor if you have diabetes or any kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have blood cancer or any viral infections (such as cytomegalovirus infection) as a precaution.
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE should be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women only if considered necessary by the physician. The most common side effects of taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Inform your doctor if they trouble you.
Uses Of BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE
It is used to manage various bacterial infections such as:
- Ear infections (Ex. otitis media)
- Nose or throat infections
- Respiratory tract infections (Ex. bronchitis and pneumonia)
- Urinary tract infections (Ex. cystitis and kidney infections)
- Genital tract infections (Ex. gonorrhoea)
- Stomach infections (Ex. peritonitis)
- Blood infections (Ex. sepsis)
- Skin or soft tissue infections (Ex. acne)
- Meningitis (inflammation of the protective layer surrounding the brain)
- Endocarditis (inflammation of the protective layer surrounding the heart)

How BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE Works
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE is a bactericidal agent. It kills the susceptible bacteria by blocking the bacterial cell wall synthesis that is essential for the bacterial cell to survive. This action destroys the susceptible bacteria, manage their further growth and multiplication and reduce the severity of the infection.
How to use BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE
Take BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE on an empty stomach or at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before meals or as advised by your physician.
For Tablet, Capsule: Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
For Dispersible Tablet: Disperse the medicine in the specified quantity of water as mentioned in the label. Consume the medicine immediately after reconstitution.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection.
It is important to take the full course of BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE without any interruption. Therefore, do not miss a dose or stop taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE without consulting your doctor as it may lead to growth of harmful bacteria within the body which cannot be further controlled by BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE.
Side Effects Of BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE
Common

- joint and muscle pain
- low WBC count (causing fever, chills, sore throat)
- low platelet count (bruising more easily)
- low RBC count (causing anaemia, pale skin, weakness, breathlessness and tiredness)
Stop taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- signs of stomach damage causing severe uncontrollable watery diarrhoea, feeling weak and fever
- severe skin reactions (such as widespread skin rash with blistering and swelling)
- bloody urine, lower back or difficulties in urination (signs of kidney problems)
- yellowing of skin and whites of the eye (signs of liver problems)
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or vomiting:
Take BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Please consult your doctor immediately if you experience severe nausea and vomiting.
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. If your diarrhea worsens, contact your doctor immediately.

Pregnancy
There is no proper information regarding the use of BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE in pregnant women. Therefore, it should be used in pregnant women only if considered necessary by the physician.

Breastfeeding
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE may pass through breast milk. Therefore, it should be used in breastfeeding women only if considered necessary by the physician.

Kidney
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

Allergy
Do not take BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE if you are allergic to Ampicillin, or to any other beta lactam antibiotics (such as amoxicillin) or cephalosporin antibiotics (such as cefixime).
Others
Before taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you:
- have glandular fever
- have lymphatic leukaemia (cancer or blood or bone marrow)
- have cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection
Use in pediatrics:
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE can be used in children and adolescents (aged 10 years or older; weighing 20 kg or more) if prescribed by the physician. However, consult your doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
Interactions
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- cytotoxic drugs such as methotrexate (used to manage rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, or malignant diseases such as lymphatic leukaemia)
- chloroquine (used to manage malaria)
- oral typhoid vaccine (used to manage typhoid)
- allopurinol, sulfinpyrazone or probenecid (medicines used to manage gout)
- other antibiotics (used to manage bacterial infections) such as tetracycline, erythromycin, and chloramphenicol
- anticoagulants such as warfarin or phenindione
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took more BACIPEN 500MG CAPSULE, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdosage might include gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
