    Introduction About ALTIN TABLET

    ALTIN TABLET is a combination of Alprazolam and Fluoxetine which belongs to the group of medicines called Anxiolytics and Antidepressants respectively. It is used to manage depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorder and other mixed psychiatric conditions.

    Before taking ALTIN TABLET inform your doctor if you have any problems in your liver or kidneys. You must also inform your doctor if you have diabetes, muscle weakness, breathing problems, depression with suicidal thoughts, any mental illnesses, history of alcoholism or drug abuse, mania, bleeding problems or epilepsy as a precaution.

    Do not take ALTIN TABLET without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) due to lack of safety data.

    The most common side effects of taking this medicine are depression, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, forgetfulness, constipation, dry mouth, decreased sex drive, problems in erection, blurred vision, problems in sleeping, weight gain or weight loss, abnormal breast growth and milk production in men and women and changes in taste. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects trouble you.

    You must also inform your doctor immediately if you experience any worsening of depression with suicidal thoughts or any other unusual changes in behaviour (such as agitation, restlessness, aggressiveness, irritability, violence or anger).

    How ALTIN TABLET Works

    ALTIN TABLET contains two medicines namely alprazolam and fluoxetine. Alprazolam is a hypnotic medicine. It suppresses the abnormal electrical activity within the brain and induces sleep.

    Fluoxetine is an antidepressant medicine. It works by regulating the release and uptake of certain chemical messengers (dopamine and serotonin) within the brain that affects thoughts, emotions, body movements and behaviour. As a result, it improves your ability to think, controls your emotions and stabilizes your mental health.

    How to use ALTIN TABLET

    Take ALTIN TABLET with or during meals or as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

    Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and health condition. Do not take this medicine for more than 4 weeks without consulting your doctor.

    Side Effects Of ALTIN TABLET

    Common

    • depression
    • headache, dizziness
    • drowsiness or sleepiness
    • jerky movements or unsteadiness
    • forgetfulness
    • slurred speech, nervousness
    • constipation, dry mouth, loss of appetite
    • tiredness, irritability, confusion, disorientation, loss of alertness
    • sexual problems, increased or decreased sex drive
    • problems in erection
    • inability to sleep or disturbed sleep
    • feeling sluggish
    • shakiness or trembling
    • double or blurred vision
    • nausea
    • weight gain or weight loss
    • abnormal breast growth and milk production in men and women
    • joint pain, fever, chills
    • changes in taste
    • skin rash, itching, excessive sweating
    • irregular heartbeat
    • passing urine more frequently
    • unexplained vaginal bleeding

    Uncommon

    • abnormally excited
    • hallucinations
    • urge to urinate
    • menstrual cramps (pain in thighs and lower back)
    • muscle spasms or weakness
    • fits
    • sensitivity to sunlight
    • bleeding from the nose
    • unable to hold urine
    • hair loss
    • lack of periods
    • mood changes, high mood, feeling lonely
    • enlarged (dilated) pupils
    • ringing in the ears
    • feeling hot or cold

    Rare

    • liver problems
    • pancreatitis
    • low RBC, WBC and platelet count in blood

    Stop taking ALTIN TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

    • signs of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (such as fever, fast heartbeat, sweating, severe muscle stiffness, confusion, increased muscle enzymes)
    • suicidal thoughts and behavior
    • changes in behavior (such as feeling agitated, restless, aggressive, irritable, violent or angry, false beliefs, nightmares and hallucinations or other inappropriate behavior)
    • memory loss (amnesia)
    • yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eye (jaundice)
    • increased sweating, faster breathing, muscle stiffness, drowsiness or sleepiness
    • signs of serotonin syndrome (feeling agitated, hallucinations, confusion, loss of consciousness, fast heartbeat, feeling dizzy, increased sweating, flushing, tremors, stiff muscles or muscle twitching, loss of coordination, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or seizures)
    • severe allergic skin reactions with blistering and peeling of skin
    • feeling restless, urge to move, increased irritation
    • prolonged or painful erections
    • increased signs of bleeding or bruising
    • signs of heart problems (such as fast or irregular heart rate, fainting, dizziness upon standing)
    • signs of blood clot (swelling, pain and redness in the le or chest pain and difficulty in breathing)

    How To Manage Side Effects

    Constipation

    Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.

    Dizziness Or Drowsiness

    Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

    Headache

    Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

    Insomnia

    Try to have a regular bedtime schedule. Avoid having naps during the daytime. Limit caffeine intake and reduce watching TV before bedtime. If the symptom does not improve, consult your doctor.

    Nausea And Vomiting

    Take ALTIN TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    Contraindicated

    ALTIN TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary by the physician, as it may harm the growing baby. Therefore, inform your doctor before taking ALTIN TABLET if you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or planning to have a baby.

    Breastfeeding

    Contraindicated

    ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk to the nursing infant. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Use with Caution

    Do not drive or handle any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness or drowsiness after taking ALTIN TABLET.

    Alcohol

    Consult your doctor

    Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking ALTIN TABLET as it might make you feel dizzier and drowsier.

    Kidney

    Use with Caution

    ALTIN TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Liver

    Consult your doctor

    ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver problems. It should be used with caution in patients with other mild liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Allergy

    Contraindicated

    Do not take ALTIN TABLET if you are allergic to fluoxetine, alprazolam or to any other sedative or hypnotic medicines (such as midazolam, nitrazepam, clonazepam).

    Lungs

    Contraindicated

    ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use in patients suffering from asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, COPD or bronchospasm. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Heart Disease

    Use with Caution

    ALTIN TABLET should be used with caution in patients with heart problems (such as slow heart rate). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Others

    ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

    • suffer from myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness)
    • have sleep apnea (breathing stops and starts during sleep)
    • have recently taken other anti-depressant medicines (MAOI)

    Before taking ALTIN TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

    • have previously experienced depression with thoughts of committing suicide
    • have any mental illnesses that required hospitalization
    • have a previous experience of drug abuse or alcoholism
    • have used any hypnotic medicine earlier
    • have mania (sudden extreme sense of excitement and hyperactivity)
    • have any bleeding disorders
    • are in any on-going electroconvulsive therapy
    • have fits (epilepsy)
    • have akathisia (restlessness)
    • have diabetes
    • have dehydration or electrolyte imbalance (due to recent vomiting, diarrhea or usage of diuretics)
    • have glaucoma

    Use in Pediatrics:

    ALTIN TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) due to lack of safety data. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Use in Geriatrics:

    ALTIN TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-Drug interactions:

    Before taking ALTIN TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • medicine used to manage depression like monoamine oxidase inhibitors (Ex. tranylcypromine, moclobemide iproniazid, nialamide, isocarboxazid, toloxatone), fluvoxamine, lithium, selegiline, amitriptyline, imipramine, bupropion, St. John’s wort
    • other medicines used to manage psychiatric disorders (such as pimozide, haloperidol, risperidone, thioridazine)
    • linezolid (a medicine used to manage bacterial infection)
    • methylthioninium chloride (a medicine used to manage high methaemoglobin in blood)
    • other medicines used to reduce anxiety and to induce sleep (such as midazolam, clonazepam, nitrazepam)
    • medicines used for blood thinning (such as heparin, warfarin)
    • tamoxifen (a medicine used to manage cancer)
    • diuretics (used to reduce edema and blood pressure) such as hydrochlorothiazide, furosemide
    • medicines used to manage diabetes (such as metformin, glimepiride, glibenclamide, insulin, pioglitazone)
    • opioid analgesic medications (such as buprenorphine, morphine, pethidine, fentanyl etc.)
    • medicines used to manage allergic reactions (such as azelastine, cyproheptadine, mequitazine)
    • medicines used to manage fungal infections (such as ketoconazole)
    • oral contraceptives (birth control pill) such as ethinylestradiol, drospirenone
    • medicines used to manage bacterial infection (such as sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin, erythromycin IV, pentamidine)
    • cimetidine (a medicine used for managing stomach ulcers)
    • medicines used to manage HIV infection (such as ritonavir, nelfinavir, atazanavir, saquinavir, indinavir)
    • general anaesthetic (used to create of loss of consciousness before surgery) such as methoxyflurane and trichloroethylene
    • medicines used to manage parkinsonism (such as levodopa, amantadine)
    • medicines used for pain relief (such as tramadol, ibuprofen, diclofenac)
    • medicines used to manage migraine headache (such as sumatriptan)
    • tryptophan (a medicine used to manage mental illness)
    • medicines used to manage abnormal heart rhythm and other heart problems (such as digoxin, quinidine, amiodarone, diltiazem, amlodipine, metoprolol, flecainide, propafenone, nebivolol or encainide)
    • medicines used to manage malaria (such as mefloquine, chloroquine, halofantrine)
    • desmopressin (a medicine used to manage diabetes insipidus)
    • atomoxetine (a medicine used to manage ADHD)

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else accidentally took more ALTIN TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose might include low blood pressure, drowsiness, confusion, feeling cold, slurred speech, breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, fits and agitation.
