INTRODUCTION

ZOFER INJECTION contains Ondansetron which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-emetics. It is used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy. ZOFER INJECTION is also used after surgeries (operation) to prevent nausea and vomiting.

Before receiving ZOFER INJECTION, inform your doctor if you have severe constipation, heart or liver problems, imbalance with the levels of salts in the blood, such as potassium, sodium and magnesium, blockage in the gut or if you have been scheduled for any surgery.

ZOFER INJECTION is not recommended for use during pregnancy. This medicine may pass through the breast milk hence it is not recommended during breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

Your doctor will administer the right dose of ZOFER INJECTION depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition. There is limited experience with the use of ZOFER INJECTION in elderly patients, consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

The most common side effects of receiving ZOFER INJECTION includes headache, flushing and constipation. Consult your doctor if any of these above symptoms gets worse.

USES OF ZOFER INJECTION

  • Used to treat and prevent nausea and vomiting induced by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery

HOW ZOFER INJECTION WORKS

ZOFER INJECTION is a serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonist (specific chemical receptor) which works by blocking serotonin receptors in CTZ chemoreceptor trigger zone (zone in the brain that is responsible for causing nausea and vomiting).

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

ZOFER INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse, into a vein as an intravenous infusion, or into the muscles as intramuscular injection. Your doctor will administer the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ZOFER INJECTION

COMMON

  • headache
  • flushing (feeling of warmth)
  • redness or irritation at the injection site
  • constipation

UNCOMMON

  • uncontrolled body movements along with upward rolling movement of the eyeballs
  • fits (seizures)
  • irregular heartbeat (fast or slow)
  • low blood pressure
  • hiccups

RARE

  • visual disturbances like blurred vision
  • effects heart rhythms resulting in feeling light-headedness or loss of consciousness

Stop receiving ZOFER INJECTION and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:       

  • sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness
  • swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth or tongue
  • skin rash, red spots or lumps under your skin (hives) or anywhere on the body

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Redness or irritation at the injection site:

Apply cold packs to the injection site to reduce pain and irritation. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Headache:

Take rest. Have good amount of sleep. Have a balanced diet at regular intervals. Add more fluids to your diet. Drink plenty of water to replenish water stores.

Constipation:

Eat plenty of fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drink water and exercise regularly. Contact your doctor if constipation persists.

Dizziness:

Lie down until the dizziness passes and get up slowly. Do not bend down suddenly. Get a lot of rest. Walk slowly and carefully. Take plenty of fluids. Avoid drinking coffee, alcohol, or smoking. Consult your doctor if the condition persists for long or gets worsened.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

ZOFER INJECTION is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy unless considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

BREASTFEEDING

ZOFER INJECTION is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

ZOFER INJECTION is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. But if you feel any side effects like dizziness or blurry vision avoid driving or using machines. Consult your doctor before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

LIVER

ZOFER INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

ALLERGY

Do not receive ZOFER INJECTION if you are allergic to Ondansetron, granisetron or palonosetron or to any other ingredients of this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

ZOFER INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with heart diseases such as uneven heartbeats (arrhythmias) or congestive heart failure. Consult your doctor before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

OTHERS

Before receiving ZOFER INJECTION, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a blockage in your gut
  • suffer from severe constipation
  • have problems with the levels of salts in the blood (such as potassium, sodium and magnesium)
  • are intolerant to some sugars (Ex. lactose intolerance)
  • are having surgery to remove your tonsils

Use in pediatrics:

Your doctor will administer the right dose of ZOFER INJECTION depends on your child’s age, body weight and disease condition. Consult your doctor before receiving ZOFER INJECTION.

Use in geriatrics:

There is limited experience with the use of ZOFER INJECTION in elderly patients, consult your doctor before receiving the medicine.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions:

Before receiving ZOFER INJECTION, inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • apomorphine (used to treat Parkinson’s disease)
  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (Ex. phenytoin, carbamazepine)
  • medicines used to treat lung infections like Tuberculosis (Ex. rifampicin)
  • tramadol, methadone (medicine used to provide relief from pain)
  • medicines used for psychotic disorders (Ex. haloperidol)
  • medicines used to treat heart problems such as abnormal heart beats (Ex. amiodarone) and/or high blood pressure (Ex. atenolol, timolol)
  • cancer medicines (Ex. doxorubicin, daunorubicin, monoclonal, trastuzumab) 
  • erythromycin, ketoconazole (used to treat infections)
  • medicines used to treat depression and anxiety (ex. fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, citalopram, venlafaxine, duloxetine escitalopram)

Overdosage:

Your doctor or nurse will administer the ZOFER INJECTION, so it is unlikely to cause overdosage. If you experience any unusual side effects after receiving ZOFER INJECTION, consult your doctor immediately.
