INTRODUCTION

STAPHONEX 500MG contains Flucloxacillin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to treat infections of the chest, throat, nose, ear, skin and soft tissue, heart, bone, meninges (membrane covering brain), digestive system, blood, kidney, bladder, and urethra. It is also used to prevent infections which occurs during major surgeries especially heart or orthopaedic surgery.

Bacterial infections are caused by multiplication of specific harmful strain of bacteria anywhere in the body. It is characterized by symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, new or sudden worsening of pain and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain.

STAPHONEX 500MG is not recommended for use in patients who are allergic to flucloxacillin, or any other penicillin antibiotics. It is also not recommended for use if you have history of allergic reaction to β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins) or history of liver diseases such as jaundice after taking flucloxacillin. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems or kidney problems such as severe kidney failure. STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

This medicine should be used with caution in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) and elderly patients. The common side effects associated with the use of STAPHONEX 500MG are diarrhoea, stomach upset, nausea and indigestion. Consult your doctor if any of the symptom worsens.            

USES OF STAPHONEX 500MG

  • To treat infections of the chest, throat, nose, ear, skin and soft tissue, heart, bone, meninges (membrane covering brain), digestive system, blood, kidney, bladder, or urethra         
  • Prevent infections which occurs during major surgeries especially heart or orthopaedic surgery

HOW STAPHONEX 500MG WORKS

STAPHONEX 500MG treats bacterial infection, where flucloxacillin binds to specific sites in the bacterial cell wall and inhibits the process of cell wall synthesis and then kills the bacteria by mediating certain enzymes into it, thereby causing the destruction of the bacterial cell.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take STAPHONEX 500MG as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with or without water at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals (empty stomach). Do not crush or chew the medicine. Do not lie down immediately after taking this medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the condition.             

SIDE EFFECTS OF STAPHONEX 500MG

COMMON

  • rash

  • red/purple discolorations on the skin

RARE

Stop taking STAPHONEX 500MG and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:   

  • signs of allergy or hypersensitivity reactions such as itchy rash, itching, sore mouth, sore eyes, swelling (typically in face, lips, throat, or tongue), or breathing problems
  • pseudomembranous colitis (severe bloody diarrhoea)
  • jaundice (skin and eyes turn yellow)
  • hepatitis (inflammation of liver tissues)
  • erythema multiforme (skin rash with red circular patches)
  • stevens-johnson syndrome (severe skin rash accompanied with fever, flushing, blisters or ulcers)
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe rash with reddening, peeling, and swelling of the skin looking like a burn)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to treat diarrhoea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Nausea:

Eat light and bland foods (such as saltine crackers or plain bread). Eat smaller meals frequently and slowly. Avoid eating oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not perform any strenuous activities immediately after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

Indigestion:

Eat smaller and frequent meals. Chew your foods slowly and properly before swallowing. Go for small walk after eating. Avoid eating fatty foods and drinking carbonated drink. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution if you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant. Consult your doctor before taking STAPHONEX 500MG.         

BREASTFEEDING

STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor taking STAPHONEX 500MG.            

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

STAPHONEX 500MG have no or negligible effect on your ability to drive and use machines.

KIDNEY

STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems such as severe kidney failure. In such cases, your doctor may adjust the dose to the lowest effective dose. Consult your doctor before taking STAPHONEX 500MG.

LIVER

STAPHONEX 500MG is not recommended for use in patients with the history of liver diseases such as jaundice after taking the medicine. It should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Consult your doctor before taking STAPHONEX 500MG.

ALLERGY

Do not take STAPHONEX 500MG if you are allergic to flucloxacillin or β-lactam antibiotics (penicillins, cephalosporins) or any other penicillin antibiotics or other ingredients of this medicine.

 

OTHERS

Before taking STAPHONEX 500MG, inform your doctor if you:     

  • have any serious illness except from the infection for which this treatment is undertaken
  • are on a sodium-restricted diet
  • have history of swelling of the face or skin rash while taking an antibiotic
  • are scheduled for oral typhoid vaccine

Use in Paediatrics:

STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution in children and adolescents (below 18 years of age). Consult child’s doctor for advice.

Use in Geriatrics:

STAPHONEX 500MG should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before taking STAPHONEX 500MG.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug Interactions

Before taking STAPHONEX 500MG, inform your doctor, if you have received or taking any of the following medicines:     

  • medicines used to treat gout Ex. probenecid, sulfinpyrazone
  • methotrexate (used to treat cancer)
  • sugammadex (used to reverse anaesthesia caused by general anaesthetics)
  • warfarin (used to prevent or treat blood clot)
  • paracetamol (used to treat pain and fever)
  • piperacillin, chloramphenicol or tetracyclines (Ex. doxycycline) (used to treat bacterial infections)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of STAPHONEX 500MG, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose are nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
