INTRODUCTION

PREMARIN 0.3MG contain conjugated estrogen which belongs to a group of medicine called Estrogen derivative. It is used for relief of symptoms occurring after menopause and prevent osteoporosis. Following menopause, the body produces less of estrogen hormone, resulting in the loss of bone density. It prevent bone loss. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bone become weak and brittle. The body constantly absorbs and replaces bone tissue. With osteoporosis, the rate of new bone creation does not keep up with old bone removal.

PREMARIN 0.3MG works by preventing symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings in women who are undergoing or have attained menopause. It also prevents the bones from becoming porous and fragile (osteoporosis) by increasing the bone density. The most common side effects are bloating, breast pain, headache, changes in hair growth (loss or increase), vaginal inflammation, nausea, vomiting abdominal pain.

Always take PREMARIN 0.3MG exactly as your doctor has told you. It must be taken with or without food. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW PREMARIN 0.3MG WORKS

PREMARIN 0.3MG works by preventing symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats and mood swings in women who are undergoing or have attained menopause. It also prevents the bones from becoming porous and fragile (osteoporosis) by increasing the bone density.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take PREMARIN 0.3MG exactly as your doctor has told you. It must be taken with or without food. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS OF PREMARIN 0.3MG

COMMON

  • abdominal uterine bleeding such as breakthrough bleeding or spotting, changes in menstrual flow, pelvic pain, vaginal inflammation, and vaginal discharge
  • tendency to get thrush
  • breast pain, breast tenderness, swollen breasts, discharge from the nipples and changes in breast tissue
  • nausea, vomiting, bloating, abdominal pain
  • headache or migraine
  • changes in mood
  • joint pain, leg cramps
  • change in your interest in sex (increased or decreased libido)
  • visible swelling of the face or ankles
  • rash, itchiness, acne and dark or red patches on the skin
  • changes in hair growth (loss or increase)
  • minor change to the eye, difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • changes in weight (increase or decrease)
  • worsening of hypocalcaemia
  • gallbladder disease or jaundice
  • inflammation of the colon

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea and vomiting:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

Abdominal pain:

Keep try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly and smaller and frequent meals. Applying a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.

Dizziness:

Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy. 

Bloating or wind:

Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly, and exercise regularly. If the symptoms get worse, contact your doctor immediately.

PREGNANCY

PREMARIN 0.3MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

PREMARIN 0.3MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

There is no evidence to suggest that taking PREMARIN 0.3MG will affect your ability to drive or to operate machinery.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with PREMARIN 0.3MG.

KIDNEY

PREMARIN 0.3MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

PREMARIN 0.3MG is not recommended in patients with active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take PREMARIN 0.3MG if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to conjugated estrogen or any other ingredients in this medicine.

LUNGS

PREMARIN 0.3MG is not recommended in patients with active lung diseases (pulmonary embolism). Before taking this medicine consult your doctor.

HEART DISEASE

PREMARIN 0.3MG is not recommended in patients with active heart diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor, if you have or have had:

  • breast cancer
  • cancer which is sensitive to estrogens such as cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrium)
  • any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • excessive thickening of the womb lining (endometrial hyperplasia)
  • blood clotting disorder (such as protein C, protein S, or antithrombin deficiency)
  • rare blood problem called porphyria
  • fibroids inside your womb
  • gallbladder disease or gallstones
  • migraine or severe headaches
  • a disease of the immune system that affects many organs of the body (systemic lupus erythematosus, SLE)
  • epilepsy
  • disease affecting the eardrum and hearing (otosclerosis)
  • low blood calcium levels (hypocalcaemia)
  • very high level of fat in your blood (triglycerides)

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor if you are taking,

  • phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine (used to treat epilepsy)
  • rifampicin, rifabutin (used to treat tuberculosis)
  • antiviral medicines such as nevirapine, efavirenz, ritonavir and nelfinavir
  • antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin
  • antifungal such as ketoconazole, itraconazole
  • herbal preparation such as St. John’s wort (used to treat depression)
  • metyrapone (used to treat Cushing’s syndrome)
  • cimetidine (used to treat stomach ulcers and reduce stomach acid)
  • corticosteroid such as dexamethasone (used to treat inflammation)
