INTRODUCTION

PEMUVE contain calcium polystyrene sulfonate which belongs to a group of medicine called ion exchange resins. It is used to treat hyperkalaemia. Hyperkalaemia is a condition where the level of potassium in your blood that is higher than normal. It works by removing the excess potassium from your body than it is needed and brings it to normal level. It is often given to people who have kidney problem and people on dialysis.

Always use PEMUVE exactly as your doctor has told you. Check the label for directions before use. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, stomach upset, loss of appetite. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW PEMUVE WORKS

SIDE EFFECTS OF PEMUVE

SERIOUS

  • allergic reaction such as rash, swallowing or breathing problem, swelling of your lip, face, throat or tongue
  • blood in your vomit or black tarry stools

COMMON

  • feeling tired, confused, having muscle weakness, cramp, or a change in heart rate
  • feeling jittery, having fits or muscle cramps
  • increased thirst
  • high blood pressure, kidney problem, heart problem or swelling in your limb
  • stomach upset, pain in your gut, narrowing or blockage of the gut
  • severe abdominal (tummy) pain, or collapse
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhoea
  • feeling short of breath or coughing

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Abdominal pain:

Try to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meal. Applying heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.

Nausea and vomiting:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

Constipation: 

Take fibre rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.

Diarrhoea:

Drink lot of fluid such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicines without talking to a doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

PEMUVE should be used with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

BREASTFEEDING

PEMUVE should be used with caution in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with PEMUVE.

KIDNEY

PEMUVE is probably safe to use in patients suffering with active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take PEMUVE if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to calcium polystyrene sulfonate or any other ingredient in this medicine.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,

  • have a low levels of potassium in your blood
  • have problems that result in high levels of calcium in your body such as thyroid problems or some types of cancer
  • gut is partially or completely blocked (obstructive bowels disease)

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor if you are taking,

  • medicine that contain salt such as magnesium, potassium, or calcium
  • laxatives (used to treat constipation) that contain magnesium
  • antacids such as magnesium or aluminium (used to treat indigestion)
  • digoxin or similar medicines from digitalis (used to treat heart problems)
  • levothyroxine or thyroxine (used for an under-active thyroid)
  • lithium (used for mental illness)
  • sweetener such as sorbitol (used to sweeten food)
