INTRODUCTION

OSTA D3 600000IU contains Calcitriol which belongs to the class of medications called vitamin D analogs. It acts in the body in a similar manner to Vitamin D. Calcitriol is indicated in the management of hypocalcemia in patients undergoing chronic renal dialysis. It significantly reduces elevated parathyroid hormone levels. It has reduction of PTH results in an improvement in renal osteodystrophy.

It increases the amount of calcium in the blood by increasing absorption of calcium from the intestines, reducing any loss of calcium from the kidneys and reduces levels of serum parathyroid hormone. It is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under18 years of age. Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines containing vitamin D, pregnant, breastfeeding or having any serious kidney or liver disease.

HOW OSTA D3 600000IU WORKS

OSTA D3 600000IU elevates the plasma levels of calcium by stimulating intestinal calcium uptake, increasing reabsorption of calcium by the kidneys, and possibly increasing the release of calcium from skeletal stores. It works by helping the body to use more of the calcium found in foods or supplements and regulating the body's production of parathyroid hormone.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Your doctor or nurse will administer this medicine by intravenous injection. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition.

SERIOUS

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after meal and stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.

Vomiting:

Drink clear or ice-cold drinks. Eat light, bland foods and avoid fried, greasy, or sweet foods.

Constipation:

Eat fruits, vegetables whole grains and high rich fiber foods.

PREGNANCY

BREASTFEEDING

OSTA D3 600000IU should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor for advice.

KIDNEY

OSTA D3 600000IU should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Tell your doctor if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Calcitriol.

OTHERS

Inform your doctor before taking this medicine, if you have,

  • hypercalcemia (increased levels of calcium levels in blood)
  • had any organ transplant
  • problems with your bones (osteoporosis)
  • are undergoing dialysis

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor, if you are taking,

  • medicines used to treat heartburn and indigestion (magnesium containing antacids)
  • medicines containing Vitamin D or vitamin D analogues (e.g. ergocalciferol, cholecalciferol)
  • medicines used to treat heart conditions (e.g. digitalis)
  • medicines used to treat epilepsy (barbiturates and anticonvulsant)
  • corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone and cortisone)
  • medicines used to treat high blood pressure or kidney problems (e.g. diuretics)
