INTRODUCTION

OESTROGEL 0.06/) contains Estradiol which belongs to the group of medicines called Estrogen Derivatives. It is used to treat and relieve symptoms that occur due to decreased estrogen circulation in body that hamper daily life after menopause (stoppage of monthly periods) in women (aged 45-55 years).

Symptoms of menopause include hot flushes (wherein face, neck and chest become hot) along with disturbances in the sleep-wake cycle leading to anxiety and depression. OESTROGEL 0.06/) is also used to prevent Osteoporosis (weakening of bones) that occurs after menopause. Estradiol is used in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).

During menopause, there is a decrease in the production of ovarian hormones. OESTROGEL 0.06/) contains the precursor to these hormones which replaces the natural Estradiol, thus helping to maintain the adequate level of hormones in circulation. This helps to relieve vasomotor symptoms (such as hot flashes) and prevents osteoporosis.

Before taking OESTROGEL 0.06/), your doctor may want to take several blood tests to check hormone levels, liver function tests to understand your existing condition. Before using OESTROGEL 0.06/), inform your doctor if your menopause was premature (at an earlier age) or, if you have higher fat content in your blood (increased triglycerides), have certain non-cancerous growths (fibroids) inside your womb, fits, headaches or gall stones.

OESTROGEL 0.06/) is not recommended to be used if there is a history or suspicion of breast cancer or cancer of the lining of the womb, unexplained vaginal bleeding, history of blood clotting disorders, blood clot in vein or arteries (stroke, heart attack) or in case of liver disease or Porphyria. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are not recommended to use this medicine. The common side effects of using OESTROGEL 0.06/) are headache, nausea, weakness, cramps in legs, pain in stomach, itching of skin tender/ painful breasts, body weight alterations and unscheduled bleeding or spotting. HOW OESTROGEL 0.06/) WORKS

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Avoid washing the area where you have applied OESTROGEL 0.06/) for at least one hour. Avoid contacting the medicine with eyes. Do not apply OESTROGEL 0.06/) to breasts, face or irritated skin. SIDE EFFECTS OF OESTROGEL 0.06/)

COMMON

  • pain, rash and itch of the skin along with increased sweating

  • disorders of joints

RARE

  • intolerance to glucose, thereby affecting sugar levels in blood
  • worsening of symptoms of the patients having epilepsy
  • increased blood pressure
  • changes in the functioning of liver
  • acne
  • production of breast milk in unusual manner and quantity
  • allergic reaction called anaphylaxis

  • yellowing of skin or eyes. It is symbolic for Jaundice and may indicate underlying liver problems
  • significant increase in blood pressure which may present itself as headache, tiredness, dizziness
  • first time onset of headache similar to migraine

  • sudden pain in chest
  • difficulty in breathing

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Rash and itch:

Try to maintain proper hygiene always. Wash your skin with a cleanser and keep your skin clean. Do not scratch the area as it may increase the rash. Use cold packs to provide relief from itch. Protect your skin from sun’s harmful rays as it may aggravate the itch. Always carry a physical/chemical sunscreen before stepping out in sun. Consult your doctor if the symptoms worsen with time.

Stomach pain and discomfort:

Stick to light and simple food. Avoid taking heavy and oily food. Use heat pads to relieve discomfort caused due to abdominal cramps. If the symptom worsens or gets prolonged, it is recommended to visit the doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

ALCOHOL

KIDNEY

OESTROGEL 0.06/) is not recommended if you have fluid retention due to kidney problems. Consult your doctor before using it.
 

LIVER

ALLERGY

LUNGS

OESTROGEL 0.06/) is not recommended in patients suffering from blockage of arteries in the lungs (Pulmonary Embolism). Consult your doctor before using it.
 

HEART DISEASE

OESTROGEL 0.06/) is not recommended if you have or recently have had a disease caused by blood clots in the arteries, such as a heart attack, stroke or angina or due to retention of fluid due to cardiac problems. Consult your doctor before using it.

OTHERS

OESTROGEL 0.06/) is not recommended for use if you:

  • have or ever had breast cancer, or if you are suspected of having it
  • have or are suspected to have cancer which is estrogen sensitive, like cancer of the lining of the womb (endometrium)
  • have any unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • you have thickening of lining of the womb (endometrial hyperplasia) that is not being treated
  • have or had a blood clot in a vein (thrombosis), such as in the legs (deep venous thrombosis)
  • have a blood clotting disorder (such as deficiency of protein C, S or antithrombin)
  • have a rare genetic blood problem called porphyria

Before using OESTROGEL 0.06/), inform your doctor if you:

  • have a premature menopause, as the potential side effects may vary with the usage of OESTROGEL 0.06/) in that case
  • have certain non-cancerous growths (fibroids) inside your womb
  • have growth of lining of womb outside your womb (endometriosis) or a history of excessive growth of the lining of womb (endometrial hyperplasia)
  • have impaired hearing due to hardening of the organs inside the ear (otosclerosis)
  • have fits (epilepsy)
  • have migraine or any other headaches
  • have calcified deposits in the gall bladder called as gall stones
  • have elevated level of fat called triglycerides in your blood

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug - Drug interactions:

Before using OESTROGEL 0.06/) inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • medicines used to treat Epilepsy (Ex. hydantoins, barbiturates, primidone, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, etc.)
  • medicines used for the treatment of tuberculosis (Ex. rifampicin)
  • medicines used to treat bacterial infections such as macrolide antibiotics (Ex. erythromycin, clarithromycin, azithromycin)
  • herbal medicines
  • anti-retroviral medicines used to treat HIV infection (Ex. ritonavir, nevirapine)
  • alcohol containing skin products (Ex. astringents or sunscreens)
  • medicines used to treat dandruff and other scalp disorders (Ex. Ketoconazole, Selenium sulfide)
  • medicines similar to anti-cancer medications that alter the pattern of skin formation such as Topical steroids (Ex. Clobetasol), NSAIDs (Ex. Ibuprofen, naproxen)

Over dosage:

In case of OESTROGEL 0.06/) is applied in more than required amount, you may experience redness and itching at the application area. Wash and clean the area and consult your doctor. In case of accidental ingestion, contact your doctor immediately.
