INTRODUCTION

MYLEFAN 2MG contains Busulfan which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-cancer agents. It is used to treat certain types of blood cancer such as chronic myeloid leukemia (cancer of white blood cells in the blood), polycythemia vera (cancer of red blood cells in the blood) and thrombocythemia (increased platelet levels).

It can also be used to treat bone marrow cancer (such as myelofibrosis). When used prior to haemopoietic progenitor stem cell transplantation, MYLEFAN 2MG can suppress the functions of immune cells (white blood cells) and prevent transplant rejection among patients who have a high WBC count or leukemia.

Before taking MYLEFAN 2MG inform your doctor if you have any lung, liver, or kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you recently had radiotherapy for cancer or having gout or any other blood problems.

MYLEFAN 2MG should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women due to increased risk of side effects. Both men and women receiving MYLEFAN 2MG must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while undergoing therapy with MYLEFAN 2MG.

The most common side effects of taking MYLEFAN 2MG are nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, diarrhea, hair loss, decrease in blood cell count and infertility. Consult your doctor if any of these side effects worsen.

USES OF MYLEFAN 2MG

It is used to:

  • Treat blood cancer (chronic myeloid leukemia, polycythemia vera and thrombocythemia)
  • Treat bone marrow cancer (myelofibrosis)
  • Prevent transplant rejection when given to patients who have high WBC count prior to haemopoietic progenitor stem cell transplantation

HOW MYLEFAN 2MG WORKS

MYLEFAN 2MG is an anticancer medicine. It acts by damaging the genetic material (DNA) of cancer cells. This prevents the cancer cells from growing and multiplying within the body. When used prior to stem cell transplantation, MYLEFAN 2MG can also suppress the functions of immune cells (white blood cells) among patients who have a high WBC count or leukemia.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take MYLEFAN 2MG as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF MYLEFAN 2MG

COMMON

  • nausea, vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • mouth ulcers
  • decrease in blood cells (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets)
  • hair loss
  • visible dark patches of the skin
  • lung inflammation (pneumonitis, pneumonia syndrome)
  • infertility both in men and women (causing lack of periods, early menopause, low sperm production)
  • delayed puberty in girls
  • yellowing of skin and whites of eye (jaundice) and liver damage
  • heart rhythm problems
  • bloody urine or difficulty in urination

RARE

  • fits (seizures)
  • eye problems or cataract
  • dry mouth
  • skin rashes, dry or itching skin

Stop taking MYLEFAN 2MG and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • any signs of fever or infection (chills, sore throat, mouth sores, cough, urinary problems)
  • abnormal bleeding and bruising (discoloration of skin)
  • sudden feeling of unwellness

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea and vomiting:

Take MYLEFAN 2MG with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if your vomiting worsens.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of fluids such as water, fruit juices or electrolytes to avoid dehydration in your body. Consult your doctor if your symptom worsens.

Mouth ulcers:

Use soft toothbrush to brush your teeth. Avoid eating spicy and acidic foods such as beverages, sodas, and processed foods. Also, you may can use over-the-counter pain relieving oral gel to get some relief.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

MYLEFAN 2MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Women of childbearing age must use a suitable contraceptive before and during treatment with MYLEFAN 2MG to avoid pregnancy.

BREASTFEEDING

MYLEFAN 2MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. However, consult your doctor before taking it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

MYLEFAN 2MG does not cause any side effects that affects your ability to drive or operate any machines. If you experience any side effects that impairs your ability to concentrate, avoid driving and operating machines.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with MYLEFAN 2MG.

KIDNEY

MYLEFAN 2MG should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

MYLEFAN 2MG should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY

Do not take MYLEFAN 2MG if you are allergic to Busulfan.

LUNGS

MYLEFAN 2MG should be used with caution in patients with lung problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

Before taking MYLEFAN 2MG inform your doctor if you have:

  • recently undergone radiation therapy for cancer treatment
  • inherited thalassemia (blood disorder results in low levels of hemoglobin in blood)
  • ever had gout (joint pain due to accumulation of uric acid in joints)

Use in pediatrics:

MYLEFAN 2MG should be used in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) only if prescribed by a physician. Therefore, consult your doctor before administration.

Use in geriatrics:

MYLEFAN 2MG should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking MYLEFAN 2MG inform your doctor, if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

  • other chemotherapy medicines (used to treat cancer) such as cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, carboplatin, methotrexate
  • itraconazole (a medicine used to treat fungal infections)
  • metronidazole (a medicine used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections)
  • phenytoin (a medicine used to prevent and treat fits)
  • deferasirox (a medicine used to remove excess iron from the body)
  • live-attenuated vaccines to prevent infections (such as oral polio, MMR vaccine)
  • paracetamol (used to treat fever and pain)
  • anesthetics (used to cause numbness before surgery) Ex. lidocaine, enflurane, isoflurane, propofol

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took more MYLEFAN 2MG, consult your doctor or visit the nearby hospital immediately. Overdosage may cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased activity of bone marrow and low levels of blood cells.
