INTRODUCTION

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET contains Methimazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Antithyroid Agents. It is used in adults to treat hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland). It is also used to treat and prepare for thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland) or for radioactive iodine treatment or used when the overactive thyroid gland cannot be removed.

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is not recommended for you if you have history of acute pancreatitis (severe abdominal pain) after using this medicine.

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver, kidney disease, large goitre (swelling in the front neck). Consult your doctor before taking it.

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is also not recommended for use in breast feeding women. Consult your doctor before taking it.

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. The most common side effects of taking METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET are anorexia (an eating disorder), muscle pain, dizziness, drowsiness, neuritis, edema, numbness hair loss, heart burn etc. Contact your doctor if any of the symptoms worsen.

USES OF METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is used in adults:

  • to treat hyperthyroidism
  • to treat and prepare for thyroidectomy or for radioactive iodine treatment
  • when the overactive thyroid gland cannot be removed

HOW METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET WORKS

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET works by stopping the thyroid gland from making too much thyroid hormone and thus is effective in the treatment of hyperthyroidism.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET

COMMON

  • anorexia (an eating disorder)
  • muscle pain
  • dizziness, drowsiness
  • neuritis (inflammation of a nerve, often with pain or tenderness)
  • edema (swelling due to fluid build-up)
  • numbness
  • hair loss
  • heart burn
  • hives
  • skin pigmentation
  • loss of taste
  • vertigo (reeling sensation)

RARE

  • drug fever (fever greater than 40.5°C)
  • nephritis (inflammation of the kidney): decreased appetite, difficulty breathing, fatigue, frequent urination, itchiness, nausea, vomiting

Stop taking METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET and consult with your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:

  • symptoms of antithyroid arthritis syndrome such as pain that spreads from one joint to another
  • symptoms of vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessel) including rash, hematuria (blood in urine) or decreased urine output, shortness of breath or hemoptysis (coughing up blood)
  • symptoms of agranulocytosis (decrease in white blood cell count) such as frequent infection with fever, chills, sore throat
  • symptoms of liver dysfunction such as jaundice (yellowish discolouration of skin and whites of the eye), loss of appetite, itching and/or pain at right upper-quadrant of stomach
  • signs and symptoms of acute pancreatitis such as severe stomach pain radiating to back, rapid heartbeat, fever, nausea and vomiting
  • signs of exfoliative dermatitis such as redness or peeling of the skin over large areas of your body

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. Consult your doctor if your dizziness did not improve.

Nausea and vomiting:

Take METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET, with or just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Contact your doctor if your nausea and vomiting did not improve.

PREGNANCY

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking it.

Women of childbearing potential should use effective methods of contraception during treatment with METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET. If you become pregnant or think you are pregnant while taking METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET, contact your doctor right away.

BREASTFEEDING

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as this medicine passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking it.

KIDNEY

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney disease and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

LIVER

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver disease and may require dose adjustment. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

ALLERGY

Do not take METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET if you are allergic to methimazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is not recommended for you, if you:

  • have history of acute pancreatitis after using METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET
  • have hereditary problems such as galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption

Before taking METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a low white blood cell count
  • have joint pain
  • have skin problems
  • have a large goitre (swelling in the front neck), the goitre may grow during treatment making it difficult to breath
  • are going to have surgery

Use in pediatrics:

METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before taking METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • digitalis glycosides Ex. digoxin, digitoxin (medicines used to treat heart failure)
  • theophylline (used to treat asthma)
  • anticoagulants Ex. warfarin (medicines used to thin blood)
  • beta blockers such as atenolol, carvedilol, labetalol (medicines used to treat high blood pressure and heart diseases)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose of METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET are nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, fever, joint pain, itching and edema (fluid retention or swelling).

Other symptoms include hepatitis (liver dysfunction), nephrotic syndrome (kidney disease), exfoliative dermatitis (severe inflammation of skin), neuropathies (nerve damage) and CNS stimulation or depression, hypothyroidism (under active thyroid gland) with symptoms of a reduced metabolism and goitre growth (swelling of the neck).

Acute kidney injury with or without the presence of nephrotic syndrome may occur during treatment with METHIMERCAZOLE 10MG TABLET. Kidney function will be closely monitored by your doctor after the initiation of this medicine to prevent progressive renal dysfunction.
