What KABIPLANIN is used for?

It is used to treat bacterial infections of the:

  • skin and underneath the skin (soft tissue)
  • bones and joints
  • lung
  • urinary tract
  • heart (endocarditis)
  • abdominal wall (peritonitis)
  • blood

It can be used to treat some infections caused by 'Clostridium difficile' bacteria in the gut.

Talk to your Doctor, if you:

  • are allergic to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have had a flushing of your upper part of your body (red man syndrome)
  • have a decrease in platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • have kidney problem
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Consult your doctor for advice before giving this medicine to your children
  • Do not drive or operate any machines while taking this medicine it may cause headache dizziness

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • drugs used to treat infections
  • ciclosporin
  • cisplatin (used to treat malignant tumors)
  • drugs used to treat heart problems
  • This medicine will normally be given to you by a doctor or nurse
  • It will be given by injection into a vein (intravenous use) or muscle (intramuscular use)
  • It can also be given as an infusion through a drip into a vein
  • Only the infusion should be given in babies from birth to the age of 2 months

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • rash, erythema, pruritus
  • pain, fever
  • sudden allergic reaction: difficulty in breathing or wheezing, swelling, rash, itching, fever, chills
  • swelling and clotting in a vein
  • decrease in your blood cell count (getting more infections than usual)
  • decrease in platelet count
  • raised blood levels of liver enzymes, creatinine
  • hearing loss, ringing in the ears or a feeling that you, or things around you are moving
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea
  • feeling dizzy or headache
  • flushing of the upper body
