FLUNIL 40MG contains Fluoxetine which belongs to the group of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is used to treat major depressive episodes and obsessive-compulsive disorder (a mental disorder in which a person feels the need to perform certain routines repeatedly) in adults. It can also be used to treat moderate to severe major depressive disorder in children aged 8 years or over, in combination with other psychological medicine, if the depression does not respond after 4-6 sessions. It is also used in combination with other psychological medicine, to treat bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder) in adults.

Take this medicine as directed by your physician. This medicine can be taken with or without meals. The most common side effects are suicidal thoughts and sleep problems. If you have thoughts of killing or harming yourself, contact your doctor immediately. Do not drive or operate any machines if your ability is affected by this medicine. Do not take FLUNIL 40MG along with monoamine oxidase inhibitors without consulting your doctor. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Fluoxetine acts by inhibiting the re-uptake of serotonin (5HT) at the post-synaptic nerve terminal of neuronal membrane, enhancing the actions of serotonin on 5HT1A receptors. As a result, it stabilizes your mood and state of well-being.


Take FLUNIL 40MG as directed by your physician. It can be taken with or without food. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.



  • thoughts of harming or killing yourself
  • feelings of weakness, drowsiness or confusion
  • prolonged and painful erection
  • serotonin syndrome (fever, muscle stiffness or tremor, confusion and extreme agitation)


  • nausea or vomiting
  • sleep problems
  • headache, dizziness, tiredness
  • diarrhea, indigestion, lack of appetite
  • weight loss
  • anxiety
  • decreased sex drive
  • change in taste
  • blurred vision
  • rapid or irregular heartbeat
  • dry mouth
  • rash, urticaria, itching
  • excessive sweating
  • joint pain
  • passing urine more frequently
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding


  • hallucinations, panic attacks
  • fits
  • vasculitis (inflammation of blood vessel)
  • swelling of tissues around neck, face, mouth and/or throat
  • sensitivity to sunlight
  • producing breast milk


Nausea or vomiting:

Try taking this medicine with, or just after meal. Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.


Drink lots of fluids, such as water or juice, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any medicines without speaking to a doctor.

Do not drive or operate any machines if your ability is affected by this medicine.


Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine.


FLUNIL 40MG should be taken with caution in patients with severe liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.


Do not take this medicine if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to fluoxetine.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you:

  • have epilepsy, manic episode, diabetes, irregular heartbeat, salt depletion due to dehydration, glaucoma, history of bleeding disorders or akathisia (feeling restless)


Talk to your doctor, if you are taking,

  • other medicines used to treat depression such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (e.g. nialamide, selegiline, iproniazid, moclobemide, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid, toloxatone), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g. imipramine, desipramine and amitriptyline) lithium or St.John’s wort
  • medicines used to treat migraine (e.g. sumatriptan)
  • medicines used to treat mental illness (e.g. tryptophan, risperidone)
  • medicines used to treat heart problems (e.g. flecainide, propafenone, nebivolol or encainide)
  • medicines used to treat allergies (e.g. astemizole, mequitazine, mizolastine, cyproheptadine)
  • medicines used to thin your blood (e.g. warfarin, aspirin, buprofen, diclofenac)
  • antimicrobial agents (e.g. sparfloxacin, moxifloxacin, erythromycin IV, pentamidine)
  • metoprolol (used to treat heart failure)
  • tramadol (used to relieve pain)
  • phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy)
  • halofantrine (used to treat malaria)
  • tamoxifen (used to treat breast cancer)
  • diuretics (increases urine output) e.g. furosemide
