It is used to treat

  • hypertension
  • hypertensive-associated vascular disorders

Talk to your doctor before taking this CETANIL O, if you:

  • are allergic to CETANIL O or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have hypotension, poor cardiac reserve, heart failure
  • suffer from yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice) or problems with drainage of the bile from the gallbladder (biliary obstruction e.g. gallstones)
  • have diabetes or impaired kidney function
  • have kidney or liver problems
  • have severe vomiting, diarrhoea, treatment with high doses of water tablets (diuretics) or if you are on a low salt diet
  • have increased levels of potassium in your blood
  • have problems with your adrenal glands
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or planning to have baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • It can be given to children and adolescents
  • CETANIL O may affect your ability to drive or use machines. If the tablets make you feel sick, dizzy or tired, or give you a headache, do not drive or use machines and contact your doctor immediately

Tell your doctor if you are taking:

  • aldesleukin, quinidine, phenytoin, rifampicin, erythromycin, other anti-hypertensive medicines
  • potassium supplements, a salt substitute which contains potassium, water tablets (diuretics) or heparin (for thinning the blood)
  • enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril
  • aliskiren
  • lithium (a medicine used to treat mood swings and some types of depression) 
  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory (NSAIDs) medicines (medicines used to relieve pain, swelling and other symptoms of inflammation, including arthritis)
  • Always take CETANIL O exactly as your doctor has told you
  • CETANIL O can be taken with or without food
  • Swallow the tablets whole with a sufficient amount of water (e.g. one glass)
  • The tablets should not be chewed

If you take more CETANIL O

  • If you have taken more CETANIL O, talk to your doctor or local hospital accident and emergency department
  • Always take the container and this leaflet with you

If you forget to take CETANIL O

  • If you have forgotten to take your medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If your next dose is due within 2 hours, take the dose now and skip the next one

If you stop taking CETANIL O

  • Do not stop taking CETANIL O until the doctor has told you to do so
Very Rare

Like all medicine, this medicine can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.


  • dizziness
  • flushing
  • headache
  • hypotension
  • peripheral oedema
  • tachycardia
  • palpitations
  • increased micturition frequency
  • lethargy


  • feeling dizzy, headache
  • feeling sick, indigestion, diarrhoea, stomach ache, gastroenteritis
  • feeling tired
  • sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, bronchitis, flu-like symptoms, cough Pain, particularly in the back, bones or joints
  • infection of the urinary tract
  • blood in the urine
  • swelling of ankles, feet, legs, hands, or arms
  • increased fat levels (hypertriglyceridaemia)
  • increased uric acid levels (hyperuricaemia)
  • rise in blood urea
  • increases in tests of liver and muscle function


  • allergic reactions that may affect the whole body
  • breathing problems as well as a rapid fall of blood pressure that may even lead to fainting (anaphylactic reactions)
  • pain or a tight or heavy feeling in the chest, especially when exercising. These may be signs of problems with your heart (angina)


  • swelling of the face, mouth and/or larynx (voice box) together with itching and rash
  • low blood pressure to fall too low in susceptible individuals or as a result of an allergic reaction
  • severe light-headedness or fainting
  • difficulty or pain when urinating, with changes in the colour and amount of urine passed
  • pain in the lower back, feeling or being sick, feeling generally unwell. These may be signs of serious problems with your kidneys


  • Severe persistent diarrhoea and substantial weight loss
