Introduction About CELRIM INJECTION
CELRIM INJECTION contains Cefepime which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, genital tract, skin and soft tissues, stomach, biliary tract, blood and the brain. It can also be used in combination with other antibiotics to manage fever among patients who have low white blood cells in the body.
CELRIM INJECTION should be under careful medical supervision. It is suitable for use both in adults and in children (who weigh more than 40kg). Therapy with CELRIM INJECTION should be continued for the stipulated duration as instructed by your doctor to achieve better results. Failing to complete the full course of the therapy or skipping doses in between the therapy may not result in adequate infection control.
Before receiving CELRIM INJECTION inform your doctor if you have a history of asthma or allergic conditions (such as hay fever). You must also inform your doctor if you have any kidney problems as a precaution. Talk to your before receiving CELRIM INJECTION if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The most common side effects of receiving CELRIM INJECTION are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anemia, pain and swelling at the site of injection, fungal infection in the mouth and stomach pain. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.
Uses Of CELRIM INJECTION
It is used in adults and children (who weigh more than 40 kg) to manage the following bacterial infections:
- respiratory tract infections (Ex. pneumonia, chronic bronchitis)
- urinary tract infections (such as cystitis and pyelonephritis)
- stomach and biliary tract infections (such as peritonitis, cholecystitis)
- skin and soft tissue infections (such as abscesses, furunculosis, impetigo, erysipelas, pyoderma, lymphadenitis)
- genital tract infections (Ex. gonorrhoea)
- blood infections (Ex. sepsis)
- bacterial meningitis (inflammation of the protective layer surrounding the brain)
- fever
How CELRIM INJECTION Works
CELRIM INJECTION is a powerful antibiotic with bacteriostatic properties. It kills the susceptible bacteria by blocking the bacterial cell wall synthesis. Unlike other cephalosporins, it can also remain unaffected by the toxic proteins produced by the bacteria (such as beta lactamases). As a result, it destroys the susceptible bacteria, manages their further growth and multiplication and reduces the severity of the infection.
How to use CELRIM INJECTION
CELRIM INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein (intravenously) or into the muscle (intramuscularly).
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection.
Side Effects Of CELRIM INJECTION
Common
- injection site reactions (pain, inflammation and swelling)
- skin rash
- diarrhoea
- anemia
- delay in blood clotting time
- positive coombs test (a blood test)
- increased liver enzymes
- increase in WBC in blood
Uncommon
- nausea, vomiting
- headache. fever
- vaginal infections
- fungal infection in mouth with white lesions
- colitis (inflammation of large intestine)
- increase in blood urea levels
- increase in serum creatinine levels
Rare
- convulsions
- tingling sensation
- taste changes
- dizziness, shortness of breath
- stomach pain, constipation
Stop receiving CELRIM INJECTION and contact your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- severe skin reactions (such as widespread skin rash, blistering, peeling or bleeding on any part of the skin with fever, chills, enlarged lymph nodes and malaise or pink or reddish skin lesions on palms or soles)
- severe uncontrollable watery diarrhoea, feeling weak and fever
How To Manage Side Effects
Nausea or vomiting:
Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult your doctor if you experience severe nausea and vomiting.
Diarrhoea:
Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not consume any medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. If your diarrhea worsens, contact your doctor immediately.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Skin rash:
Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly moisturize your skin. Consult your doctor if your skin rash worsens.
Injection site reactions:
Place an ice pack at the site of injection. Do not move the affected area. Consult your doctor if the symptom worsens.
Warning & Precautions
Pregnancy
CELRIM INJECTION should be used in pregnant women only if it is considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before receiving it.
Breastfeeding
CELRIM INJECTION should be used with caution among breastfeeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.
Driving and Using Machines
Do not drive and operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness after receiving CELRIM INJECTION.
Kidney
CELRIM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.
Allergy
Talk to your doctor before receiving CELRIM INJECTION if you are allergic to cefepime or to any other beta-lactam antibiotics (Ex. amoxicillin).
Lungs
CELRIM INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with a history of asthma. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.
Others
Before receiving CELRIM INJECTION inform your doctor if you:
- have a history of allergic conditions (such as hay fever or nettle rashes)
- are going to have any blood tests (such as Coombs test)
- are going to have any urine tests (such as urine glucose tests)
Use in paediatrics:
CELRIM INJECTION can be used in children and adolescents who weigh more than 40kg if prescribed by the physician. However, consult your doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
CELRIM INJECTION should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before receiving it.
Interactions
A.Drug–Drug interactions:
Before receiving CELRIM INJECTION inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- aminoglycoside antibiotics (used to manage bacterial infections) Ex. gentamycin, streptomycin
- diuretics (used to reduce edema and blood pressure) Ex. spironolactone, amiloride, frusemide
- medicines used to manage blood clotting (Ex. warfarin)
Overdosage:
CELRIM INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual side effects.

Can CELRIM INJECTION manage viral infections?
No. CELRIM INJECTION cannot manage viral infections. It manages only bacterial infections. It acts by killing the susceptible bacteria which are responsible for causing infections, and therefore not effective against any viral infections.
