INTRODUCTION

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION contains Amoxicillin and Clavulanic acid, which belong to the group of medicines called Penicillins and Beta-Lactamase Inhibitors. It is used in children for the treatment and prophylaxis of various bacterial infections (such as respiratory tract infections, which include pneumonia), acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis), bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis), middle ear infections (otitis media), tonsillitis, sinusitis, skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis, boils, wound infections, intra-abdominal sepsis, dental infections, infections of genital organs in females.

Along with treatment with AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION your doctor might order bacterial culture tests to enhance the outcomes of the treatment and in cases of prolong treatment with AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION your doctor might conduct complete blood count, liver or kidney function test.

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney impairment, a history of liver problems or jaundice after taking penicillin antibiotics. AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from glandular fever (viral infection causing sore throat, high fever, swelling of salivary glands etc), liver disease, kidney disease, who are not passing urine daily, convulsions (fits) or large intestine inflammation.

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless clearly necessary. AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breastmilk. AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION should be used with caution in neonates, infants (less than 12 weeks of age). Consult your doctor before receiving AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION. The most common side effects after receiving AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION are diarrhoea, thrush (fungal infection), etc. Consult your doctor immediately in case any of side effects worsens.

HOW AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION WORKS

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION help in treating bacterial infection where Amoxicillin works by inhibiting penicillin binding proteins (which are involved in the synthesis of bacterial cell wall) leading to activation of autolytic enzymes in the bacterial cell wall. Therefore, leading to lysis of the cell wall and death of bacterial cell and Clavulanic acid inhibits the activity of bacterial enzymes known as beta lactamases and hence enhancing the antibacterial activity of amoxicillin.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an intravenous infusion or intravenous injection. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of treatment for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • diarrhoea
  • thrush (candida fungal infection)

UNCOMMON

  • rashes, itching, hives (raised itch rashes)
  • urticaria
  • nausea and vomiting
  • dizziness, headache
  • indigestion
  • abnormal liver enzymes

RARE

  • erythema multiforme (skin rashes, blisters, small target rashes)
  • low number of platelets (cells that helps in clotting)
  • decreased white blood cells
  • swelling and inflammation at site of injection

Stop receiving AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:

  • severe allergic reaction which includes rashes, collapsing or fainting, swelling of face, throat which may cause difficulty in breathing, fever, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes of neck, armpits, groin, red or purple raised spots on skin due to inflammation of blood vessels
  • swelling and tenderness of vein which is very painful on touching
  • watery diarrhoea with blood or mucus, fever, abdominal pain which occurs due to inflammation of large intestine
  • inflammation of liver (hepatitis), jaundice (yellowing of white part of eyes, nails, skin paleness)
  • inflammation of kidney tubes
  • delayed blood clotting
  • convulsions (fits) most commonly experienced by patients suffering from kidney disease

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea, vomiting:

Receive the medicine, before meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy food. Consult your doctor if your symptoms get worse or persist.

Itchy skin:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin and do not scratch the affected area. Apply moisturizing cream, Sunscreen and use protective clothing. Consult your doctor if your symptoms get worse or persist.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of water or fruit juices to keep you hydrated. Don’t take any medicine on your own to treat diarrhoea. Consult your doctor if your symptoms get worse or persist.

Headache:

ALLERGY

Do not receive AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION if you are allergic to Amoxicillin, Clavulanic acid, Cephalosporins or any other ingredients in this medicine.

OTHERS

Before receiving AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you have:

  • not been urinating regularly
  • convulsions (fits)
  • large intestine inflammation
  • urine and blood tests

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • medicines used to treat gout (Ex. allopurinol, probenecid)
  • medicines used to treat blood clots (Ex. warfarin)
  • methotrexate (used for the treatment of cancer, severe psoriasis)
  • medicine used to prevent organ transplant rejection (Ex. Mycophenolate mofetil)
  • medicines used for prevention of pregnancy (oral contraceptives)

Overdosage:

AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms. Symptoms of overdose of AUGPEN 150MG INJECTION are nausea, diarrhoea, fits, upset stomach.
