    Introduction About TERRAMYCIN

    TERRAMYCIN contains a medicine Oxytetracycline which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used to manage a wide range of infections caused by bacteria. These include lung infections such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis or whooping cough, urinary tract (bladder and kidney) infections, sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or syphilis, skin infections such as acne, infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis, rickettsial infections such as Q fever or tick fever (severe headache, rash, high fever).

    It is also used for other infections such as brucellosis (headache, sickness, fever, swollen lymph nodes), psittacosis (headache, nose bleeds, shivering, fever), plague (painful swelling of the lymph nodes), cholera (severe sickness and diarrhoea), leptospirosis (fever causing jaundice or meningitis), gas-gangrene and tetanus (lock jaw).

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney, liver disease, porphyria, systemic lupus erythematosus. Consult your doctor before taking it.

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women unless considered necessary. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12 years and it should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before taking this medicine.

    Uses Of TERRAMYCIN

    Manages a wide range of infections caused by bacteria such as:

    • lung infections such as pneumonia, chronic bronchitis or whooping cough
    • urinary tract infections
    • sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or syphilis
    • skin infections such as acne
    • infections of the eye such as conjunctivitis
    • rickettsial infections such as Q fever or tick fever
    • other infections such as brucellosis, psittacosis, plague, cholera, leptospirosis, gas-gangrene and tetanus (lock jaw)

    How TERRAMYCIN Works

    TERRAMYCIN works by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis, leading to cell death. Thus, helps to manage the bacterial infection effectively.

    How to use TERRAMYCIN

    Take TERRAMYCIN as advised by your doctor. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. It can be taken either 1 hour before food or 2 hours after.

    Do not take the medicine immediately before going to bed. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending on your age, body weight and disease condition.

    Side Effects Of TERRAMYCIN

    Uncommon

    • exfoliative dermatitis

    Rare

    • swelling or ulceration of the oesophagus (gullet)

    Stop taking TERRAMYCIN and consult with your doctor if you experience any of the following:

    • symptoms of an allergic reaction such as skin rashes, itching, swelling of the face, lips tongue, throat causing breathing difficulty or wheezing which can lead to collapse
    • chest pain or breathing difficulties or a dry cough (symptoms of pericarditis or swelling of the heart membrane)
    • symptoms of raised pressure in the skull such as headache, visual problems including blurred vision, blind spots, double vision
    • sensitivity to sunlight or artificial light such as sun-bed (symptoms such as tingling, burning or redness of the skin)
    • serious skin reactions such as swelling or peeling or Stevens-Johnson syndrome (symptoms are fever, blisters on the skin, eyes, mouth and genitals)

    Warning & Precautions

    Pregnancy

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Breastfeeding

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in breast feeding women unless considered necessary. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Driving and Using Machines

    Do not drive or operate machinery if you have any problems with your eyesight after taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Kidney

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney disease. It must be used with caution in patients with reduced kidney function. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Liver

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in patients with severe liver disease. It must be used with caution in patients with reduced liver function. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Allergy

    Do not take TERRAMYCIN if you are allergic to oxytetracycline or to other tetracyclines or to aspirin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

    Others

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for you, if you:

    • have porphyria
    • have systemic lupus erythematosus (an immunological disorder which affects the skin, brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, joints and other organs)

    Before taking TERRAMYCIN, inform your doctor if you:

    • have myasthenia gravis (a condition characterised by muscle weakness, difficulty chewing and swallowing and slurred speech)
    • are going to have an operation
    • have an intolerance to sugars

    Use in pediatrics:

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12 years as it can cause permanent discolouration of tooth enamel and affect bone development. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Use in geriatrics:

    TERRAMYCIN should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    Interactions

    A. Drug-drug interactions:

    Before taking TERRAMYCIN, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

    • penicillin’s such as amoxicillin (used to manage infections)
    • vitamin A (used for vitamin A deficiency and night blindness)
    • retinoids such as acitretin, isotretinoin and tretinoin (medicines used to manage acne)
    • anticoagulants such as warfarin or phenindione (medicines used to thin the blood)
    • oral contraceptives (medicines used to manage pregnancy) Ex. levonorgestrel
    • diuretics such as furosemide (used to increase urine production)
    • kaolin-pectin and bismuth subsalicylate (medicines used to manage diarrhoea)
    • insulin, glibenclamide, gliclazide (medicines used to manage diabetes)
    • mineral supplements such as aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium, bismuth, zinc salts
    • antacids (medicines used to manage indigestion) Ex. sodium bicarbonate
    • methoxyflurane (used as an anaesthetic)
    • lithium (used to manage bipolar disorder and depression)
    • ranitidine, sucralfate and tripotassium dicitratobismuthate (medicines used to manage ulcers)
    • colestipol or cholestyramine (medicines used to lower the amount of fats in your blood)
    • quinapril (used to manage high blood pressure and congestive heart failure)
    • strontium ranelate (used to manage postmenopausal osteoporosis)
    • ergot alkaloids such as ergotamine or methysergide (medicines used to manage or manage migraine)
    • digoxin (used to manage heart failure)
    • halofantrine (used to manage malaria)
    • theophylline (used to manage asthma)

    B. Drug - Food interaction:

    Do not take TERRAMYCIN along with milk or food, as they can make the medicine less effective.

    Overdosage:

    If you or anyone else have accidentally taken too much of TERRAMYCIN, consult with your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.

    Can TERRAMYCIN cause diarrhoea?

    Yes, this medicine may cause diarrhoea in some individuals. Drink lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juices to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid taking any medicine on your own for managing diarrhoea. Consult your doctor if your diarrhoea did not improve.

    What precautions have to be taken while using TERRAMYCIN?

    Take special care if you are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight or UV light (sun beds). You may experience photosensitivity reactions (Ex. skin rash or easier burning). Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor if you experience any symptoms such as tingling, burning or redness of the skin.

    Can I take TERRAMYCIN during pregnancy?

    TERRAMYCIN is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for pregnancy before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    What to avoid while using TERRAMYCIN?

    Take TERRAMYCIN according to the doctor's advice. Some foods, milk and other dairy products can affect the absorption of this medicine. The medicine should be taken preferably on an empty stomach (either 1 hour before food or 2 hours after). Consult your doctor before taking it.

    Why shouldn’t you take TERRAMYCIN before bed?

    Lying down right after taking TERRAMYCIN can cause esophagus irritation as well, so don't take it immediately before going to bed. Contact your doctor for advice before taking TERRAMYCIN.

    How long does TERRAMYCIN takes to work?

    Usually, it starts working soon after taking this medicine. However, it may take some days to kill all the harmful bacteria and make you feel better.
