World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated globally from August 1- 7. It is observed by World Alliance For Breastfeeding Action (WABA), WHO and UNICEF towards creating awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding confers indispensable benefits for both mother and newborn by shielding the bodies from various infections and diseases. Doctors recommend breastfeeding the baby within an hour of the birth as the first milk also known as ‘colostrum’ is loaded with antibodies, proteins and essential carbs that will protect the infant from various chronic ailments and food allergies.

Paediatricians strongly believe that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life contributes towards building a greater immunity against various infections.

Breastfeeding or lactation helps in building a great emotional bond with your baby. Studies reveal that breastfeeding also helps in losing post-partum weight much faster.

The right diet in the right amounts is extremely crucial for the well-being of a lactating mother. Include energy-dense, protein-rich, healthy fat, loaded with vitamins and mineral-rich foods in the daily diet regimen to secrete and replenish the breast milk.

Some of the best foods that promote lactation are oatmeal, barley, garlic, fennel, basil, jeera, fenugreek, carrot, beetroot, raw papaya, green leafy vegetables, and bottle gourd.
