It is found that Stroke is the second leading cause of death after coronary artery diseases, worldwide. India accounts for more than four-fifths of all strokes; about 1.8 million Indians out of a 1.2 billion population suffer from a stroke every year. Every 40 seconds someone in the globe has a stroke, with older adults (65 and above) accounting for about two-thirds of these temporary blockages of blood flow to the brain.

To lower the risk of stroke, lifestyle changes stand out to be the most important remedy rather than just medication. Know your numbers and keep your blood pressure under control. Follow these strategies to reduce risk of stroke:

1.Shape up

Maintain your weight within a healthy range for your age and gender. Being overweight increases your blood pressure, ups cholesterol levels and the risk of developing diabetes. Set realistic goals for weight loss, as there are no quick fixes.

2.Eat a lot healthy food

Go for a balanced diet filled with fruits and vegetables and also include a good source of lean proteins. Stay away from processed foods, limit red meats, fried and salted foods. This works well to prevent stroke.

3.Get Active

Stay active and get involved in moderate intensity exercise for 30 minutes at least, 5 days in a week. Change your habits to be on the move in ways you can:

Take the stairs instead of the lift.

Leave the car or bike at home for short trips, walk instead.

Get off the bus or train a stop early and walk the distance to reach the office

Involve in activities or sports that interest you on regular basis-gardening, tennis, cycling or golf.

4.Quit smoking

Smoking is not only linked to many types of cancer such as lung and stomach cancer but also a top risk factor for stroke. Get assistance from your health care provider to quit and do your best to kick the habit.

5.Alcohol -Moderate It

Moderation is the key always. Go with the recommended limits of drinking alcohol.

6.Stress: Ease It

If you can really delete stress from your life, your brain and body will thank you. Stress can up your risk of stroke and can cause a lot of health issues. A healthier lifestyle that involves meditation, yoga, walking to explore nature can help you alleviate the harmful effects of stress on the body.
