Uses of Spironolactone

Spironolactone is used to treat fluid accumulation in the tissues due to heart disorders and in the abdominal cavity, severe heart failure (NYHA III-IV), and certain kidney disorders.

It is also used to treat high blood pressure along with a salt-free diet and diuretics. It can also be used to diagnose and treat Conn’s disease (a disorder in which excess levels of aldosterone is produced in the adrenal cortex).

How Spironolactone works

Spironolactone works by competitively binding to receptors at the aldosterone-dependent sodium-potassium exchange site in the kidney tubules, causing increased amounts of sodium and water to be excreted, while retaining potassium.
