Uses of Cefixime

Cefixime is used to treat bacterial infections in children (aged between 6 months or older). It can also be used in the treatment of typhoid fever.

Therapeutic Category

Cefixime: Antibiotics

How Cefixime works

Cefixime is a powerful antibiotic with bacteriostatic properties. It works by killing the susceptible bacteria by blocking the bacterial cell wall synthesis. Unlike other cephalosporins, it can also remain unaffected by the toxic proteins produced by the bacteria (such as beta lactamases). Collectively, these actions destroy the susceptible bacteria, prevent their further growth and multiplication and reduce the severity of the infection.

Common side effects of Cefixime

  • nausea or vomiting
  • stomach pain, indigestion, diarrhea or wind
  • headache, dizziness
  • itchiness of the genital (or vaginal) areas

When to consult your doctor

Consult your doctor:

  • In case of accidental overdosage
  • If you experience, any signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • If you experience unusual bleeding or bruising, bleeding from the nose or gums with pale skin, tiredness, chills, and shortness of breath
  • If you find blood in urine or experience difficulties in urination
  • If you experience signs of brain damage (such as fits with or without confusion, lack of alertness and unusual muscle movements)
  • If you experience signs of stomach damage causing severe uncontrollable watery diarrhoea, feeling weak and fever

Health Tips for Cefixime

  • Take cefixime exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Never take more or less than the recommended dose and complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better
  • Cefixime is generally taken with meals to improve its absorption and reduce the risk of stomach upset. Check with your doctor or the medication label for specific instructions on how to take it
  • Before starting cefixime, inform your doctor about any other medications, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine as it can decrease its effectiveness
  • Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy or breast feeding
