How Anastrozole works

Anastrozole effectively helps in the treatment of breast cancer by cutting down the amount of hormone called estrogen. It acts on muscles, breast tissue and, fatty tissue where the enzyme aromatase is present. Aromatase helps in the formation of estrogen. Anastrozole stops the production of aromatase hence, decreasing the synthesis of estrogen.

Common side effects of Anastrozole

  • hot flushes
  • feeling weak and sleepy
  • pain or stiffness in joints
  • inflammation of the joints (arthritis)
  • allergic reaction or skin rash (hypersensitivity)
  • nausea and vomiting
  • headache
  • bone loss due to decreased density of bone (osteoporosis)

  • thinning of your hair (hair loss)
  • diarrhoea
  • loss of appetite
  • tingling, pain, coldness, weakness in parts of the hand (carpel tunnel syndrome)

  • Severe skin reaction with ulcers or blisters on the skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Allergic (hypersensitivity) reactions with swelling of the throat that may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing (angioedema)
