    Description

The Sterimed Nasopharyngeal Airway (SMD 720) is a medical device designed to maintain an open airway. It is a soft, curved tube made from medical-grade PVC that is inserted into the nasal passageway to bypass upper airway obstructions. This can be particularly useful when a person is unconscious or semi-conscious, as the tongue can relax and block the airway. The device is intended for short-term use to help with ventilation and oxygenation.

Made from soft, non-irritant medical-grade PVC for patient comfort. Features an anatomically designed, smooth, rounded, and beveled tip to facilitate gentle insertion. Designed with a flared end or rotatable flange to prevent the device from being lost inside the nose and to assist with securing it. The tube is kink-resistant to ensure a continuous, unobstructed pathway for air. Supplied sterile in an individual peel-pouch for single use, eliminating the risk of cross-contamination.

Q: What is a nasopharyngeal airway used for?

A: A nasopharyngeal airway is a tube inserted into the nasal passageway to secure an open airway, particularly when a person is unconscious or semi-conscious. It helps prevent the tongue from obstructing the airway, allowing for improved oxygenation and ventilation. It is also used in emergencies and to facilitate suctioning.

Q: Who should insert this device?

A: The use of a nasopharyngeal airway is restricted to qualified doctors or healthcare professionals only. They have the training to select the correct size and insert it properly following medical guidelines to ensure patient safety.

Q: What is the Sterimed nasopharyngeal airway made of?

A: The Sterimed Freevent™ Nasopharyngeal Airway is crafted from a soft, non-irritant, medical-grade PVC (polyvinylchloride). This material is designed to adapt to the nasal passage's natural contours.

    Q: Is this product reusable?

A: No, this is a single-use device. It is supplied in a sterile, individually peelable pouch and should not be re-sterilised or reused, in order to eliminate the risk of cross-contamination.

Q: What are some contraindications for using a nasopharyngeal airway?

A: A nasopharyngeal airway should not be used if a patient has a history of nosebleeds (epistaxis), a fractured nasal bone, nasal polyps, or has had recent nasal surgery. It is also contraindicated in cases of significant facial or cranial trauma. A healthcare professional will determine if it is appropriate for the patient.

    Key Benefits

Maintains a patent airway by displacing the tongue and soft palate, allowing for improved oxygenation and ventilation. It is a suitable option for patients who have an intact gag reflex, as it typically does not cause gagging, unlike oropharyngeal airways. Can be used in situations where the patient's mouth is difficult to open or access, such as in cases of facial trauma or trismus. Serves as a temporary measure to ensure the airway is clear until a more definitive airway can be established or until the patient can breathe on their own. Considered less invasive than some other airway management techniques, which can reduce the risk of trauma to the oral cavity.

    Direction for Use/Dosage

This product is intended for use by a qualified healthcare professional only. 1. Select the appropriate size of the airway. A general guide is to measure from the side of the nostril to the tragus of the ear on the same side. 2. Ensure the patient's nostrils are clear of any secretions. 3. Lubricate the tip and outer surface of the airway with a water-soluble lubricant to ease insertion. 4. With the bevel of the tip facing the nasal septum, gently insert the airway into the nostril, following the natural curve of the floor of the nose. 5. Do not force the tube. If resistance is met, try rotating it gently or attempt insertion in the other nostril. 6. Confirm proper placement by checking for airflow and ensuring the tube is not too long, which could cause gagging.
