What ZONIT 100MG is used for?

  • ZONIT 100MG is used in the treatment of seizures(fits) in adults

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to Zonisamide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • are allergic to other sulphonamide medicines, such as sulphonamide antibiotics, thiazide diuretics, and sulfonylurea antidiabetes medicines
  • are allergic to peanut or soya
  • are younger than 12 years old, as you may be at greater risk of decreased sweating, heat stroke, pneumonia and liver problems
  • have liver problems
  • have eye problems such as glaucoma.
  • have previously suffered from kidney stones
  • are underweight, or have lost a lot of weight
  • Do not breast-feed while taking, or for one month after stopping ZONIT 100MG
  • If you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • Do not give this medicine to children below the age of 6 years because it is not known for this age group whether the potential benefits are greater than the risks
  • It is not recommended for children who are underweight or have a small appetite, and should be used with caution in those below 20 kg
  • ZONIT 100MG may affect your concentration, ability to react/respond, and may make you feel sleepy, particularly at the beginning of your treatment or after your dose is increased
  • Be careful while driving or operating machinery

Tell your doctor if you are taking,

  • digoxin and quinidine used for heart problems
  • carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (topiramate and acetazolamide)
  • clomipramine, hydroxyzine, diphenhydramine, haloperidol, imipramine and oxybutynin
  • phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbitone used for fits
  • Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you
  • It must be swallowed whole with water
  • Do not chew the medicine
  • It can be taken once or twice daily

The recommended adult dose

When you take ZONIT 100MG on its own:

  • The starting dose is 100 mg taken once a day
  • The recommended dose is 300 mg once a day

When you take ZONIT 100MG with other antiepileptic medicines:

  • The starting dose is 50 mg daily taken in two equal doses of 25 mg
  • The recommended daily dose is between 300 mg and 500 mg

Use in children (aged 6 to 11 years) and adolescents (aged 12 to 17 years) weighing at least 20 kg:

  • The starting dose is 1 mg per kg of body weight taken once a day
  • This may be increased by 1 mg per kg of body weight at intervals of one to two weeks
  • The recommended daily dose is 6 to 8 mg per kg for a child with a body weight of up to 55 kg or 300 to 500 mg for a child with a body weight more than 55 kg (which ever dose is lower) taken once a day

If you take more ZONIT 100MG

  • If you may have taken more ZONIT 100MG than you should, tell your doctor immediately, or contact your nearest hospital casualty department since you may become sleepy and could lose consciousness 

If you forget to take ZONIT 100MG

  • If you forget to take a dose, take the next dose in the usual time you take
  • Do not take double the dose to make up for the forgotten dose

If you stop taking ZONIT 100MG

  • Do not reduce your dose or stop your medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so
Very Rare

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • have difficulty breathing, a swollen face, lips or tongue, or a severe skin rash (severe allergic reaction)
  • high body temperature but little or no sweating, rapid heartbeat and breathing, muscle cramps, and confusion
  • have thoughts of harming or killing yourself
  • have pain in your muscles or a feeling of weakness
  • kidney stones marked by sudden pain in your back or stomach, have pain on urinating (passing water) or notice blood in your urine
  • eye pain or blurred vision
  • have an unexplained skin rash
  • have blood disorder marked by sore throat, swollen glands, or find that you bruise more easily
  • have signs of increased acid level in the blood marked by headache, drowsiness, shortness of breath and loss of appetite
  • difficulty sleeping, strange or unusual thoughts, feeling anxious or emotional
  • slowed thoughts, loss of concentration, speech abnormalities, abnormal skin sensation (pins and needles), tremor, involuntary movement of the eyes
  • kidney stones
  • hair loss
  • ecchymosis (a small bruise caused by blood leaking from broken blood vessels in the skin)
  • loss of weight, nausea, indigestion, stomach pains, diarrhoea (loose stools), constipation
  • swelling of the feet and legs
  • agitation, irritability, confusion, depression, poor muscle coordination, dizziness, poor memory, sleepiness, double vision
  • loss of appetite, decreased blood levels of bicarbonate
  • anger, aggression, thoughts of suicide, suicide attempt
  • vomiting
  • gall bladder inflammation, gallstones
  • urinary stones
  • lung infection/inflammation, urinary tract infections
  • low blood potassium levels
  • convulsions/seizures


  • hallucinations, memory loss, coma, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (inability to move, sweating, fever, incontinence), status epilepticus (prolonged or repeated seizures)
  • breathing disorders, shortness of breath, inflammation of the lungs
  • inflammations of the pancreas (severe pain in the stomach or back)
  • liver problems, kidney failure
  • severe rashes or skin peeling
  • swollen glands, blood disorders
  • decreased sweating
  • glaucoma, which is a blockage of fluid in the eye causing increased pressure in the eye

  • Do not use this medicine after the expiry date
  • Store at room temperature (15-25ºC)
