INTRODUCTION

VANTOX CP 500MG contains Vancomycin which belongs to a group of medicines called glycopeptide antibiotics. It is used to treat severe infections caused by susceptible strains of methicillin-resistant (betalactam-resistant) staphylococci and staphylococcal endocarditis.

Vancomycin is a tricyclic glycopeptide antibiotic which inhibits the synthesis of the cell wall in sensitive bacteria by binding with high affinity to the D-alanyl-D-alanine terminus of cell wall precursor units. The bactericidal action of vancomycin against Staphylococcus aureus and the vegetative cells of Clostridium difficile results primarily from the inhibition of cell wall biosynthesis and alters the bacterial cell membrane permeability and RNA synthesis.
