What TRAJENTA DUO is used for?

  • The two active substances work together to control blood sugar levels in adult patients with diabetes called ‘type 2 diabetes mellitus’
  • Along with diet and exercise, this medicine helps to improve the levels and effects of insulin after a meal and lowers the amount of sugar made by your body
  • It can be used alone or with certain other medicines for diabetes like sulphonyl urea, insulin or empagliflozin

Talk to your doctor, before taking this medicine, if you,

  • are allergic to linagliptin or metformin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have severely reduced kidney function
  • have uncontrolled diabetes
  • ever had a diabetic pre-coma
  • have a severe infection such as an infection affecting your lung or bronchial system or your kidney, which can put you at risk for lactic acidosis
  • have lost a lot of water from your body (dehydration), e.g. due to long-lasting or severe diarrhoea, or if you have vomited several times in a row which may lead to kidney problems, which can put you at risk for lactic acidosis
  • are treated for acute heart failure or have recently had a heart attack, have severe problems with your circulation (such as shock) or have breathing difficulties
  • have liver problems
  • drink alcohol to excess, either every day or only from time to time
  • have symptoms of acute pancreatitis

TRAJENTA DUO with alcohol

Avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking TRAJENTA DUO since this may increase the risk of lactic acidosis

  • You should not use TRAJENTA DUO, if you are pregnant. It is unknown if this medicine is harmful to the unborn child
  • It passes into human milk in small amounts
  • Talk to your doctor if you want to breast-feed or pregnant while taking this medicine
  • This medicine is not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years
  • TRAJENTA DUO has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines
  • TRAJENTA DUO in combination with medicines called sulphonylureas or with insulin can cause too low blood sugar level (hypoglycaemia), which may affect your ability to drive and use machines or work without safe foothold

Tell your doctor if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.

  • medicines which increase urine production (diuretics)
  • medicines used to treat pain and inflammation (NSAID and COX-2-inhibitors, such as ibuprofen and celecoxib)
  • certain medicines for the treatment of high blood pressure like ACE inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor antagonists
  • medicines that may change the amount of metformin in your blood, especially if you have reduced kidney function (such as verapamil, rifampicin, cimetidine, dolutegravir, ranolazine, trimethoprim, vandetanib, isavuconazole, crizotinib, olaparib)
  • carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin these may be used to control fits (seizures) or chronic pain
  • rifampicin, this is an antibiotic used to treat infections such as tuberculosis
  • medicines used to treat diseases that involve inflammation, like asthma and arthritis (corticosteroids)
  • bronchodilators(ß-sympathomimetics) for the treatment of bronchial asthma
  • alcohol-containing medicines
  • The amount of TRAJENTA DUO that you will take varies depending on your health condition
  • Your doctor will tell you exactly the dose of this medicine to take
  • Take the dose prescribed by your doctor with meals to lower your chance of an upset stomach
  • You should continue your diet during treatment with TRAJENTA DUO and take care that your carbohydrate intake is equally distributed over the day

If you take more TRAJENTA DUO

  • If you take more TRAJENTA DUO you may experience lactic acidosis

If you forget to take TRAJENTA DUO

  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Never take two doses at the same time (morning or evening)

If you stop taking TRAJENTA DUO

  • Keep taking TRAJENTA DUO until your doctor tells you to stop. This is to keep your blood sugar under control

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia): trembling, sweating, anxiety, blurred vision, tingling lips, paleness, mood change, or confusion
  • inflammation of the pancreas (persistent, severe abdominal pain)
  • wheezing and shortness of breath
  • rash, hives (urticaria; frequency rare)
  • swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing
  • diarrhoea, blood enzyme increase (lipase increase)
  • inflamed nose or throat (nasopharyngitis)
  • cough, loss of appetite (decreased appetite)
  • stomach upsets, blood enzyme increase (amylase increase), itching (pruritus)
