What TETRASPAN is used for?

  • TETRASPAN is a plasma volume substitute that is used to restore the blood volume when you have lost blood, where treatment with alternative infusion solutions known as 'crystalloids' alone are not considered to be sufficient.

Talk to your doctor before using TETRASPAN, if you:

  • are allergic to any of the ingredients in TETRASPAN
  • suffer from serious generalized infection (sepsis)
  • suffer from burn injury
  • have any kidney, liver or heart problem
  • have fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) 
  • have been told that you have a severe increase of potassium, sodium or chloride in your blood
  • have severe problems with your blood clotting
  • have received an organ transplant
  • have hyperhydration (have too much fluid in your body)
  • If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking TETRASPAN
  • You will receive TETRASPAN only if the doctor has considered the potential benefits outweighing the possible risks to the unborn child, especially when you are in the first trimester
  • It is not recommended to use TETRASPAN in children
  • TETRASPAN does not influence your ability to drive and using machines

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines such as:

  • aminoglycosides, a special type of antibiotics
  • medicines that make you retain potassium or sodium (e.g. spironolactone, amiloride)
  • medicines for the treatment of heart weakness (e.g. digitalis preparations, digoxin)
  • TETRASPAN will be given to you by your doctor or nurse
  • It will be administered to you by a drip into a vein (intravenous infusion)

  • allergic reactions including swelling of the face, tongue or throat, difficulties to swallow, hives and breathing difficulties
