INTRODUCTION

TENOHEP AF contains Tenofovir alafenamide which belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-viral drugs. It is used to treat chronic (long-term) hepatitis B infection in adolescents and adults (aged 12 years and older). Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver, causes long-term infection and can result in liver damage. It can show symptoms like easy tiredness, anxiety, lack of appetite, jaundice, fits and vomiting.  

Before taking TENOHEP AF, inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney disease, hepatitis C or D (viral liver infection), HIV infection, intolerance to some sugars. TENOHEP AF should be used with caution in pregnant women and it is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women.

Prior to the treatment, your doctor may want you to take several blood tests to understand your existing condition. During the treatment take precautions to avoid sexual contact and spreading the infection to others. 

TENOHEP AF is not recommended for use in children who are (younger than 12 years of age or weighing less than 35 kgs) and it should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). The most common side effects of taking TENOHEP AF are headache, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, stomach pain, joint pain, rash, itching and tiredness. Consult your doctor if any of the side effect worsens.

HOW TENOHEP AF WORKS

TENOHEP AF works by inhibiting an enzyme (viral polymerase), causing chain termination, which in turn, inhibits DNA synthesis and viral replication, thereby preventing the virus to produce new viruses and stops the infection from spreading.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take TENOHEP AF as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Your doctor will decide the right dose and duration depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition. Do not stop taking TENOHEP AF unless your doctor advices to stop.

SIDE EFFECTS OF TENOHEP AF

COMMON

  • headache, dizziness
  • diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, feeling bloated, flatulence
  • joint pain
  • rash, itching
  • tiredness

UNCOMMON

  • swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue (angioedema)
  • hives (urticaria)
  • increased liver enzyme in the blood

RARE

Stop taking TENOHEP AF and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • new onset or worsening of kidney impairment
  • lactic acidosis (too much acid in the blood) (signs include weakness or tiredness than usual, unusual muscle pain, shortness of breath or fast breathing, stomach pain with nausea and vomiting, fast or abnormal heartbeat, cold or blue hands and feet, feeling dizzy or light-headedness)
  • signs of severe liver problems (such as yellowing of skin or white of the eyes, dark tea-colored urine, light-colored stools, loss of appetite, stomach pain or nausea)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Nausea or vomiting:

Take TENOHEP AF with meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not lay down or sleep immediately after eating. If symptom does not show improvement, consult your doctor.

Headache:

Drink ample amount of water. Get adequate rest. Try to be relaxed and stress free. Apply pain relieving balm on your forehead if necessary. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not show improvement.

Dizziness:

Lie down until dizziness is gone. Move slowly and carefully, do not hurry. Get adequate rest. Drink plenty of water and other fluids. Avoid coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. If symptom does not show improvement, consult your doctor.

Diarrhea:

Drink lot of water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating high-fat or spicy foods. if symptoms does not show improvement consult your doctor.

Stomach pain:

Try to rest and relax. Have smaller meals more frequently. Keep a heat pad. If the symptom does not show improvement, consult your doctor.

Flatulence:

Eat smaller and frequent meals and exercise regularly (walking). Limit the intake of carbonated drinks. Avoid eating foods such as beans, lentils which cause bloating. If the symptom does not show improvement, consult your doctor.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

TENOHEP AF should be used with caution during pregnancy only if considered clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before taking TENOHEP AF.

BREASTFEEDING

TENOHEP AF is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as the medicine passes to baby through breast milk. Consult your doctor before taking TENOHEP AF.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or use any machines if you feel dizzy after taking TENOHEP AF.

KIDNEY

TENOHEP AF should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease or problems. Consult your doctor before taking TENOHEP AF.

LIVER

TENOHEP AF should be used with caution in patients with history of liver disease, including hepatitis C or D (viral liver infection that leads to serious liver damage). Consult your doctor before taking TENOHEP AF.

ALLERGY

Do not take TENOHEP AF if you are allergic to Tenofovir alafenamide or any other ingredients of this medicine.

OTHERS

Before taking TENOHEP AF, inform your doctor if you have:

  • HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection
  • intolerance to some sugars

Use in paediatrics:

TENOHEP AF is not recommended for use in children who are (younger than 12 years of age or weighing less than 35 kgs). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.

Use in geriatrics:

TENOHEP AF should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before taking TENOHEP AF.

INTERACTIONS

Before taking TENOHEP AF, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • other medicines used to treat hepatitis B infection (Ex. tenofovir alafenamide, tenofovir disoproxil, adefovir dipivoxil)
  • ritonavir or cobicistat boosted darunavir, lopinavir, atazanavir (used to treat HIV infection)
  • medicines used to treat bacterial infections including tuberculosis (Ex. rifabutin, rifampicin, rifapentine)
  • medicines used to treat fits (Ex. carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin)
  • St. John’s wort (herbal medicine for depression and anxiety)
  • medicines used to treat fungal infections (Ex. ketoconazole or itraconazole)

Overdose:

If you or anyone else accidentally take too much of TENOHEP AF, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital due to increased risk of side effects.

Can I pass hepatitis B infection to others while taking TENOHEP AF?

Yes, you can still pass the infection to others while taking TENOHEP AF. It does not reduce the risk of infecting others with hepatitis B through sexual contact or blood contamination. Discuss the precautionary measures needed with your doctor to avoid infecting others.

What if I miss a dose of TENOHEP AF?

It is important not to miss a dose of TENOHEP AF but if you do, take the next dose as soon as possible if you remember within 18 hours of previous dose. Do not take the forgotten dose if you remember after 18 hours or more of previous dose. Wait and take your next dose as per schedule.

What if I vomit a dose of TENOHEP AF?

If you have vomited a dose of TENOHEP AF in less than 1 hour after taking it, take another medicine. Do not take another dose if you vomit the medicine more than 1 hour after taking it.

Can I stop taking TENOHEP AF?

Do not stop taking TENOHEP AF without consulting your doctor, as it may worsen your condition. It could be very serious if you already have any liver problems. When you stop taking TENOHEP AF, your doctor will monitor you for several months to check your infection. If you have any more doubts regarding the use of this medicine, ask your doctor.

Can TENOHEP AF be used in children?

No, TENOHEP AF is used for adults and not recommended for use in children who are (younger than 12 years of age or weighing less than 35 kgs). Child’s doctor will decide the correct dose or select a suitable alternative therapy for your child.
