What SYSCAN is used for?

It is used to treat,

  • Cryptococcal meningitis – a fungal infection in the brain
  • Coccidioidomycosis – a disease of the bronchopulmonary system
  • infections caused by Candida and found in the blood stream, body organs (e.g. heart, lungs) or urinary tract
  • mucosal thrush - infection affecting the lining of the mouth, throat

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to fluconazole, to other medicines you have taken to treat fungal infections or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • have liver or kidney problems
  • suffer from heart disease, including heart rhythm problems
  • have abnormal levels of potassium, calcium or magnesium in your blood
  • have ‘adrenal insufficiency’ where the adrenal glands do not produce adequate amounts of certain steroid hormones such as cortisol
  • This medicine should not be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding
  • SYSCAN is not for use in children and adolescents below 16 years of age
  • This medicine may cause dizziness and occasionally fits or other side effects that may affect you. You should not drive or use machines until you are sure you are not affected

Tell your doctor if you are taking:

  • cisapride (used for stomach upsets)
  • pimozide (used for treating mental illness)
  • quinidine (used for treating heart arrhythmia)
  • erythromycin (an antibiotic for treating infections)
  • astemizole for allergies
  • medicines to thin your blood (e.g. warfarin)
  • rifabutin or rifampicin (for tuberculosis) or other anti-fungal medicines (including ketoconazole)
  • medicines to reduce cholesterol (e.g. statins)
  • medicines for high blood pressure, water tablets (diuretics) or for heart problems
  • amiodarone (used for rhythm disorders)
  • medicines for mental health conditions (e.g. triazolam, midazolam or tricyclic antidepressants) or for epilepsy (e.g. carbamazepine or phenytoin)
  • methadone (for pain relief or treatment of opioid dependence)
  • fentanyl, alfentanil, or non steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (for pain relief or inflammation)
  • medicines for diabetes such as glyburide, tolbutamide, glipizide
  • ergotamine or methysergide (for migraine) or other ergot derivatives
  • zidovudine or saquinavir (for HIV infection)
  • ciclosporin, sirolimus, or tacrolimus (given after transplant surgery, or for psoriasis or rheumatisim)
  • ivacaftor (used for treating cystic fibrosis)
  • vitamin A (nutritional supplement)
  • This medicine will be given by your doctor or nurse as a slow injection (infusion) into your vein

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

  • sudden wheezing, difficulty in breathing or tightness in the chest
  • swelling of eyelids, face or lips
  • itching all over the body reddening of the skin or itchy red spots
  • skin rash
  • severe skin reactions such as a rash that causes blistering (this can affect the mouth and tongue)
  • liver problems include: tiredness, loss of appetite, vomiting
  • headache
  • stomach discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • increases in blood tests of liver function
  • rash
  • reduction in red blood cells which can make skin pale and cause weakness or breathlessness
  • inability to sleep, feeling drowsy, dizziness, sensation of spinning, tingling, pricking or numbness
  • changes in sense of taste, constipation, difficult digestion, dry mouth
  • muscle pain
  • lower than normal white blood cells
  • low platelet count, other blood cell changes
  • high blood levels of cholesterol, fats
  • low blood potassium
  • change in heart rate or rhythm
  • hair loss

  • Once opened the product should be used immediately
