INTRODUCTION

SITADAC 50 contain sitagliptin which belongs to a group of medicine called DPP-4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors) which is used for lowering blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medicine helps to treat high blood sugar along with diet and exercise. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a condition in which your body does not make enough insulin, or the insulin produced by your body does not work as well. When this happens, sugar builds up in the blood which can lead to serious medical problems like heart and kidney disease. It helps to increase the levels of insulin produced after a meal and decreases the amount of sugar made by the body. 

SITADAC 50 can be used alone or in combination with certain other medicine (insulin, metformin, sulphonylureas, or glitazones) that lower blood sugar which you may already be taking for your diabetes together with a food and exercise plan. This medicine is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, or pancreas problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW SITADAC 50 WORKS

SITADAC 50 works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas. It also reduces the amount of glucagon, a hormone produces by pancreas which causes liver to produce more sugar. So by reducing the amount of glucagon in your body, this medicine helps to reduce the levels of glucose in your blood.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Always take SITADAC 50 exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken with or without food. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

SIDE EFFECTS OF SITADAC 50

SERIOUS

  • severe and persistent pain in the abdomen which might reach through to your back with or without nausea and vomiting as these could be signs of an inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • serious allergic reactions (including rash, hives, blisters on the skin/peeling skin and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and throat that may cause difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • kidney problems

COMMON

  • low blood sugar
  • headache
  • upper respiratory infection, stuffy or runny nose
  • sore throat
  • osteoarthritis
  • arm or leg pain

RARE

  • reduced number of platelets

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Headache:

Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.

Leg pain:

Rest as much as possible. Elevate your leg. Apply ice for up to 15 minutes. Gently stretch and massage cramping muscles.

Nausea and vomiting:

Keep try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.

PREGNANCY

SITADAC 50 is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

BREASTFEEDING

SITADAC 50 is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness and drowsiness.

ALCOHOL

Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment with SITADAC 50.

KIDNEY

SITADAC 50 should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

LIVER

SITADAC 50 should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.

ALLERGY

Do not take SITADAC 50 if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to sitagliptin or any other ingredients in this medicine.

OTHERS

Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,

  • pancreatic disease
  • gallstones, alcohol dependence or very high levels of triglycerides in your blood
  • type 1 diabetes
  • diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes with high blood sugar and rapid weight loss, nausea, or vomiting)

INTERACTIONS

Talk to your doctor if you are taking,

  • digoxin (used to treat irregular heartbeat and other heart problems)

How long do I need to take SITADAC 50?

This medicine only helps to manage your blood sugar levels. but does not cure your diabetes. Keep taking this medicine as long as your doctor recommends it. You may have to take it lifelong. It is an important to keep your blood sugar levels under control as any fluctuations in your blood sugar levels may cause serious problems. Therefore, do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor.
