INTRODUCTION

RELITIL INJECTION contains Chlorpromazine which belongs to the group of medicines called Antipsychotics. It is used to treat the following conditions such as schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid), mania and hypomania, anxiety psychomotor agitation excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behaviour, intractable hiccup and nausea, vomiting of terminal illness (where other medicines have failed or are not available). It is also used to treat schizophrenia and autism (in children).

It is not recommended for use in patients with CNS depression, bone marrow depression and Phaeochromocytoma. Consult your doctor for advice before receiving the medicine.

Before receiving this medicine inform your doctor if you have heart diseases, liver disease or kidney problems, thyroid, epilepsy, and parkinson’s disease.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctors before receiving this medicine. Tell your doctor if you will be exposed to extreme heat, or to insecticide poisons while you are taking this medicine.

The most common side effects are drowsiness, dry mouth or stuffy nose, blurred vision, constipation and impotence. Consult your doctor if any of the above side effects gets worse.

USES OF RELITIL INJECTION

It is used to treat the following conditions:

  • schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid), mania and hypomania
  • anxiety psychomotor agitation excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behaviour
  • intractable hiccup
  • nausea and vomiting of terminal illness (where other medicines have failed or are not available)
  • schizophrenia and autism (in children)

HOW RELITIL INJECTION WORKS

RELITIL INJECTION exerts its antipsychotic effect by blocking postsynaptic dopamine receptors in cortical and limbic areas of the brain, thereby preventing the excess of dopamine in the brain.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

RELITIL INJECTION will be administered intramuscularly or intravenously by your doctor or nurse. Your doctor will administer the correct dose for you depending upon your conditions.

SIDE EFFECTS OF RELITIL INJECTION

COMMON

  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth or stuffy nose
  • blurred vision
  • constipation
  • impotence

RARE

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any side effects after receiving the medicine:

  • sudden appearance of sore throat, fever or other signs of infection
  • allergic reactions symptoms such as hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • uncontrolled muscle movements in your face such as chewing, lip smacking, frowning, tongue movement, blinking or eye movement
  • stiffness in your neck, tightness in your throat, trouble breathing or swallowing
  • confusion, agitation, feeling jittery, trouble sleeping
  • weakness
  • breast swelling or discharge
  • seizures
  • jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • low white blood cell counts such as fever, chills, mouth sore, skin sore, sore throat, cough, trouble breathing, feeling light-headed
  • severe nervous system reactions such as very stiff (rigid) muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, fast or uneven heartbeats, tremors

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Dry mouth:

Chew sugar-free gum. Control caffeine intake. Do not use mouthwashes. Sip water regularly.

Constipation:

Eat fiber rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

RELITIL INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

BREASTFEEDING

RELITIL INJECTION is not recommended for use in breast feeding women as it may pass into breast milk. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines, after receiving RELITIL INJECTION since it may reduce the alertness.

ALCOHOL

Avoid consumption of alcohol while receiving this medicine.

KIDNEY

RELITIL INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from kidney diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

LIVER

RELITIL INJECTION is not recommended for use in patients with liver failure or active liver disease. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

ALLERGY

Do not receive RELITIL INJECTION if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to Chlorpromazine or other ingredients of this medicine.

LUNGS

RELITIL INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering chronic respiratory disorders. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

HEART DISEASE

RELITIL INJECTION should be used with caution in patients suffering from heart diseases. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

OTHERS

RELITIL INJECTION is not recommended if you have:

  • CNS depression
  • jaundice or blood dyscrasia
  • bone marrow depression
  • phaeochromocytoma
  • epilepsy
  • parkinson’s disease
  • hypoparathyroidism
  • myasthenia gravis
  • prostatic hypertrophy

Before receiving RELITIL INJECTION inform your doctor if you have:

  • glaucoma
  • stroke risk factors
  • thromboembolism

Use in pediatrics:

RELITIL INJECTION is not recommended for use in children under 1 year of age. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

Use in geriatrics:

RELITIL INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients. Consult your doctor before receiving this medicine.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving RELITIL INJECTION tell your physician if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • benztropine (used to treat Parkinson’s disease)
  • antacids (used to treat ulcers)
  • lithium (used as mood stabilizers)
  • ciprofloxacin (treats infection)
  • fluvoxamine (treats OCD)
  • oral contraceptives
  • vemurafenib (used to treat cancer)
  • oral anticoagulants (used to treat blood clot)
  • guanethidine and clonidine
  • quinidine, disopyramide, amiodarone and sotalol (treats heart disorders)
  • bepridil, cisapride, sultopride, thioridazine, methadone
  • intravenous erythromycin, intravenous vincamine
  • halofantrine, pentamidine, sparfloxacin
  • stimulant laxatives, intravenous amphotericin B
  • glucocorticoids and tetracosactides
  • other antipsychotic medicines

Overdosage:

RELITIL INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms. Symptoms of overdose includes dry mouth, bloating or stomach cramps, feeling restless, fever, muscle stiffness, jerky muscle movements, changes in heart rate, fainting, or seizure (convulsions).
