PREVENAR 13 contains Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPV) 13 which belongs to the group of medicine called killed vaccine. It helps to give protection against pneumonia (infections of the lungs), meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord), bacteremia (infection of the blood cells) and other pneumococcal infections caused by 13 conjugate types of the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae in both adults (18 years and older) and in children (6 weeks to 17 years). It can also be used to prevent ear infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae in children (6 weeks to 17 years).

Vaccines are generally given to boost your immune system and protect you from harmful infections. Vaccination against Pneumococcal infections using PREVENAR 13 offers immune protection to you and your child against the 13 pneumococcal types included in the vaccine. PPV-13 enhances your body’s natural defense system by increasing the production of antibodies that help to protect against pneumococcal infections.

PREVENAR 13 is not meant for self-administration. It should be given only by a healthcare professional only in the muscles of arms or legs. The most common side effects of this vaccine are injection site reactions (such as pain, redness and swelling) and fever. Contact your doctor if they bother you. Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you or your child has a poor immune system or having any other serious infection with high fever.

This medicine should be used with extreme caution in prematurely born infants (born before 28 weeks), because it may cause longer gaps than normal between breaths for 2-3 days after vaccination. Consult your doctor before taking this vaccine, if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, or breastfeeding.
