What PENTASA 1GM is used for?

  • PENTASA 1GM is used to treat inflammation in the gut caused by conditions such as active ulcerative colitis

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to mesalazine or any of the other ingredients in PENTASA 1GM or other salicylates such as Aspirin
  • have severe liver or kidney problems
  • have problems in clotting of blood 
  • have lung problems 
  • The newborn may develop allergic reactions such as diarrhoea after breast-feeding
  • If the newborn develops diarrhoea, breast-feeding should be discontinued
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or are breast feeding you should speak to your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
  • PENTASA 1GM is not suitable for use in children


Tell your doctor if you are taking

  • Warfarin, medicine used to treat blood clots
  • Always use PENTASA 1GM exactly as your doctor has told you
  • The enema should be used in the back passage (rectum) only
  • Usually your doctor will ask you to use one enema at bedtime

How to use the enema

  • Shake the bottle before use after taking out of the aluminium foil pack
  • To break the seal, twist the nozzle clockwise one full turn
  • Put your hand in one of the plastic disposal bags provided in the pack
  • To administer the enema, lie on your left side with the left leg straight and the right leg bent forward for balance
  • Carefully insert the applicator tip into the rectum
  • Maintain sufficient steady hand pressure while dispersing the bottle content
  • The bottle content should be applied within max. 30-40 seconds
  • Once the bottle is empty, withdraw the tip with the bottle still compressed
  • The enema should be retained in the bowel
  • Remain relaxed in the administration position for 5-10minutes or until the urge to pass the enema has disappeared
  • Roll the plastic disposal bag over the empty bottle
  • Discard it and wash your hands

If you use more PENTASA 1GM 

  • If you accidentally use too much, you should go to your nearest emergency department or contact your doctor

If you forget to use PENTASA 1GM 

  • If you forget to use a dose, use the next dose in the morning if it is convenient
  • Otherwise, use one as usual the next night
  • Do not use a double dose to make up for the forgotten one

If you stop using PENTASA 1GM

  • Do not stop taking these without first talking to your doctor
Very Rare

Like all medicines, PENTASA 1GM can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.


  • rash
  • itching


  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • diarrhoea
  • flatulence
  • change in colour or amount of urine
  • allergic reactions and fever
  • skin rash or blisters
  • semen with a low concentration of sperm
  • tingling or numbness in the hands and feet

  • Store at room temperature (15-25°C)
  • Do not use after the expiry date
  • Keep out of reach of children
