INTRODUCTION

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION contains Pemetrexed which belongs to the group of medicines called Anticancer agents. It is used to treat advanced stages of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It can be used as a treatment option to control cancer progression in patients who have failed to respond adequately to conventional therapies.

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is also used to treat malignant cancer of pleural membrane (a protective layer surrounding the lungs), called as pleural mesothelioma. It is mostly used in combination with other anti-cancer medicines (such as cisplatin, carboplatin) to achieve better results.

Before receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you have any lung, liver, kidney or heart problems or a previous history of the same. You must also inform your doctor if you have fluid accumulation in the lungs or recently received or planning to receive any radiation therapy or vaccination in the upcoming days as a precaution.

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women and in children aged below 18 years. Men and women receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION must use a suitable contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while undergoing therapy with PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION and for until 6 months after stopping the therapy.

The most common side effects of receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION are increased infections, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, tiredness, weight loss, changes in taste, skin rash, hair loss and mouth ulcers. Contact your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.

HOW PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION WORKS

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is an anticancer medication. It works by blocking the activity of certain enzymes (Ex. dihydrofolate reductase, thymidylate synthase etc.) in the body that may help cancer cells to grow and multiply. As a result, it reduces abnormal growth and multiplication of cancer cells in the body.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein (as an intravenous infusion).

Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION

COMMON

  • infections, fever, sore throat
  • hair loss
  • nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite
  • stomach pain, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea
  • mouth ulcers (pain, redness, swelling on the mouth)
  • tiredness, dehydration, dizziness
  • skin rash (marks may resemble bull’s eye)
  • flaky skin, loss of sensation on the skin, increased skin pigmentation
  • changes in taste
  • muscle weakness or wasting, unsteady movements
  • eye inflammation, dry eyes, eye swelling, eye irritation, tearing
  • irregular heartbeat
  • increase in liver and kidney enzymes
  • swelling of body parts
  • inflammation of the gut

UNCOMMON

  • rectal inflammation or bleeding
  • inflammation and redness of esophagus

RARE

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects after receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION:

  • fever, increased infections, sepsis (infections of the blood)
  • chest pain, fast heart rate
  • inflammation of the mouth with pain, redness and swelling
  • signs of allergic reactions (such as skin rash, swelling of the face, lips, mouth, or throat which can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
  • severe skin reactions with blistering and peeling of skin, burning or prickling sensation or fever
  • signs of low RBC in blood (tiredness, pale skin, fainting, breathlessness)
  • increased tendency to bleed (such as bleeding gums, bleeding from the nose or mouth)
  • unexpected bruising
  • signs of blood clot in lungs (such as breathlessness, heavy chest pain or cough with bloody sputum)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Skin rash:

Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate your skin further. Do not scratch the affected area. Use protective clothing when going outdoors. Regularly moisturize your skin. Consult your doctor if your skin rash worsens.

Headache:  

Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

Nausea and Vomiting:

Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. If your nausea worsens, consult your doctor for advice

Mouth ulcers:

Avoid eating spicy foods. Drink plenty of water. Apply a pain-relieving gel on the affected areas of the mouth if required. Consult your doctor if the symptom did not improve

Diarrhoea

Drink lots of fluids, such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to treat diarrhoea and consult your doctor if the symptom gets worse.

Constipation

Try to eat more high-fibre foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables, cereals, and drink plenty of water. Try doing exercise regularly (going for a daily walk or run). If this does not help, inform your doctor for receiving alternate treatments for constipation.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in pregnant women due to increased risk of side effects. Women of childbearing potential must use a suitable contraceptive to avoid pregnancy while undergoing therapy with PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION. If you accidentally became pregnant while receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION, inform your doctor immediately.

BREASTFEEDING

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as it may pass through breast milk. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel tired after receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION.

KIDNEY

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. It should also be used with caution in patients who has a previous history of kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

LIVER

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

ALLERGY

Do not receive PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION if you are allergic to pemetrexed or to any of the other ingredients of the medicines.

LUNGS

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with fluid accumulation around the lungs. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

HEART DISEASE

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in patients with heart problems. It should also be used with caution in patients who has a previous history of heart problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

OTHERS

Before receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you:

  • have had or are going to take radiation therapy
  • have been recently vaccinated

Use in pediatrics:

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) due to lack of safety data. Therefore, consult your doctor before receiving it.

 Use in geriatrics:

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years and above). Consult your doctor before receiving it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before receiving PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • medicines used to treat pain and inflammation (Ex. ibuprofen)
  • live or attenuated vaccines (Ex. yellow fever vaccine)

Overdosage:

PEMEETRON 100MG INJECTION will be administered to you only by a doctor or nurse in a hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your physician or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms.
