What OXEPTAL is used for?

  • OXEPTAL is indicated as adjunctive therapy of partial seizures in adults and in children 6 years to 17 years of age

Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine, if you:

  • are allergic to Oxcarbazepine or Carbamazepine or to any of the other ingredients of OXEPTAL
  • have or have had suicidal thoughts or actions, depression or mood problems
  • have liver or kidney problems
  • have low sodium level in blood
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant/breast feeding, planning to become pregnant, or if you become pregnant during treatment
  • This medicine is excreted in human milk
  • Because of the potential adverse reactions in nursing infants, this medicine should be taken only on the advice of the doctor during breast-feeding
  • This medicine is recommended for use in children above 6 years of age
  • OXEPTAL can cause sleepiness or dizziness which may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery

Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

  • phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital
  • oral contraceptives
  • Take OXEPTAL exactly as prescribed
  • This medicine is taken as a single daily dose on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or at least 2 hours after meals)
  • Swallow the tablets whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew the tablets
  • Recommended daily dose is 1200 mg to 2400 mg once per day
  • Adults: Initiate with a dose of 600 mg once per day. Dose increases can be made at weekly intervals in 600 mg per day increments to achieve the recommended daily dose
  • Children: Target dose is based upon weight. Titrate to target dose over two to three weeks
  • Initiate with 8 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg once per day. Increase in weekly increments of 8 mg/kg to 10 mg/kg once daily, not to exceed 600 mg, to achieve target daily dose
  • Patients with creatinine clearance less than 30mL/minute: Start at 300 mg per day and increase slowly
  • Geriatric Patients: Start at lower dose (300 mg or 450 mg per day) and increase slowly

If you take more OXEPTAL

  • If you take more OXEPTAL, call your doctor right away

If you forget to take OXEPTAL

  • If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Do not take more than your prescribed daily dose

If you stop taking OXEPTAL

  • Do not stop taking OXEPTAL without talking to your healthcare provider
Very Rare

Like all medicines this medicine can cause side effects although not everybody gets them.

  • allergic reactions, affects organs marked by swelling of your face, eyes, lips, or tongue, trouble swallowing or breathing, a skin rash
  • yellowing of your skin or eyes severe fatigue, weakness, muscle pain
  • changes in vision
  • confusion
  • fever
  • infection
  • problems with balance, speaking, walking
  • suicidal thoughts or other mood changes
  • trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting
  • nervousness
  • tremors
  • trouble sleeping
